One of our Pierburg electric fuel pumps has failed. Has anyone found a place to purchase these in the US other than Lockwood?

Jim,

I have a Pierburg electric fuel pump on my Allegro 2000 (original
equipment), with a Rotax 912 UL. Knowing that some day I may have to replace
it I tried to find a source for a replacement, but could not. I believe this
brand of fuel pump is distributed here in the US by a distributer in SC that
supplies them for the BMW plant in Greenville SC. I finally found out the
name of the company and contacted them. I have forgotten who they are now.
They ask what type engine the pump was to be installed on. When I replied a
Rotax 912 engine, they responded that they could not supply me with a pump!
I suspect they knew it was going to be installed on an airplane engine and
did not want the liability. What was Lockwood's price? What is the model
number on your pump? Do you have a photo of the pump you could send me? I
would like to know if it is the same as on my engine. If my pump is the same
as yours and you do fine a good source please let me know. Attached is a
photo of the installation on my Allegro 2000. The fuel pump is the large
silver cylinder.

Hi Guys,

Seems like an auto parts store should be able to hook you up with this particular pump if it is for a BMW. Why not use a Facet pump?

We purchased a replacement pump from Leading Edge Airfoils. They had it in stock and are close enough so that UPS Ground had it here the next day. Cost was $362.

The pump is a Pierburg 7.21440.78. There are several similar Pierburg pumps in the E1F series and the performance specifications are quite different.

So although the price is high we think it is worthwhile to have the correct pump for our engine (914 relies on electric pumps, no mechanical pump) and also to support Rotax dealer for future parts and technical support.

Jim/Heather,

I ask Leading Edge Airfoils if they carried Pierburg fuel pump No.
7.21440.51 (the pump that is on my Allegro 2000) and they told me they did
not carry Pierburg pumps. Also I cannot find Pierburg pumps on their
website. What did you do to get your pump??

Hugh, Unless you have moved your Allegro from S-LSA to E-LSA any change in fuel pump must have a Letter of Authorization from the manufacturer in order to maintain your airworthiness certificate and becomes part of the aircraft's permanent record.

Rick,

Sorry, I did not mention it, but my Allegro is E-LSA.
