Hi,
3 pics taken by a friend who bummed a ride with me a couple of weeks ago. For those with strong stomachs there is a pic. of me in close up. Delete Now.
The intersting pic is that of the Caen Hill flight of locks, 19 in all (I think) which lifts the Kennet and Avon Canal which runs from Bristol to London , from the valley floor up to Salisbury Plain.

Pat,
Interesting series of locks. I've never seen them done that way with the "side pools". How much elevation change is there from top to bottom of that photo?
Our Erie Canal locks are simply straight line locks with no "side pools". One of these days I'll have to do a photo flight along the canal and get a shot or two.

Hi Thom,
the canal is about 90 miles long and this flight lifts nearly 250ft. The
main flight of around 19 locks are squeezeinto something just under 2 miles
I think. That is why the large pounds were built. There was not enough room
for anything else.
The canal is fed mainly by a very old, and large steam driven beam engine
which lifts a ton of water at a stroke from the nearby river..
I am sure there are lots of pics on google. my strip is about 2 miles away.

The Eerie Canal is a blast to travel along by boat -- Thom, you're
not too far from where a road goes under the Canal; that would make
a great aerial pic. The Waterford Steps are pretty far away from you.

Hi Russ,
I suspect that the Erie canal is more like the French Canals which
accomodate very large boats called paniches. The English canal boat was only
7ft wide although some are pretty long. This is probably due to the fact
that the canals were dug with a pick and shovel and the amount of earth to
be moved was kept to a minimum.
Locks usually hold 2 boats side by side.
Incidentally the digging was done by gangs of itinerant workmen who lived in
large camps which moved slowly on as the digging progressed.They were the
scourge of the countryside.Thieving and fighting as they went. Because they
were navigating their way across country they were known as `navigators`
which was shortened to `navvies` which is what that sort of labourer was
called in my young day. Of course they use JCB`s and so on these days and
that type of workman has almost disappeared.

Thanks for the info Pat and Russ. I'll look them up on Google Maps. Since I'm not a native of Buffalo, I keep learning lots of new things about the area. Thanks to BB for the canal info/photo links.
This has nothing to do with Kolbs other than interesting things to see from the air in a Kolb.
When the Erie Canal was operating at its peak it would accommodate fairly large vessels but not now. Low bridges have been built over the canal so that only relatively small pleasure boats can navigate the entire length.
The big ships get between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie via Welland Canal in Ontario about 15 miles west of Buffalo.

This pic does have something to do with Kolb aircraft. Homer Kolb at the
Kolb Aircraft Homecoming, 2007, in front of John Bickham's mkIII, after John
B led John Williamson and I from LA to London, KY.
This is what some of us like to do best, fly cross country and camp out with
our Kolbs.

Not Kolb-related except for this warning: PLEASE DO NOT FLY UNDER
BRIDGES.
If anyone ever needs to know, the Eerie Canal's bridges, all 294 of
them, have a minimum clearance of 15'4"
Pretty tight for a Kolb.
There's a 'flight' of five locks at Lockport; no longer used. Culvert
Road goes under the Canal near Medina. Lovely country.
