Hello gents,
Now that I have purchased my Europa monowheel, I'd like to get trained to fly such a beast.
As I do not know how long it will take before my machine is deemed airworthy in Canada, I'm looking for someone that could provide me with a "crash course" on their Europa monowheel.
eally I would need to be able to log these hours, as I am sure my insurer would love me dearly for this.
I do need to practice the take-offs and landings quite a bit, so maybe it wouldnt be ideal if you want us to go on a cross-country. I give lots of extra points for training in Canada by someone with an instructor rating.
I have just renewed my pilot's license, and have not piloted in well over 10 years. I used to fly C152 and gliders, and do not have a lot of hours logged on either.
I'm willing to take a week off for that endeavor, sometime after the end of July 2010. You name your spot, your price, your time and... ...well I gotta check anyways with my various bosses (job, wife, banker, etc.)
I'm awaiting your proposals.
Regards,
Luc

Luc,
Congratulations on completing your Europa purchase and digging into
the challenge of registering an "experimental" amateur-built in
another country.
Unfortunately, I cannot make you a proposal responsive to what you've
laid out. I will face a situation similar to yours upon completion of
my mono, though I'm happy to say that I have about 600 hours of
taildragger time.
I'm sure many on this list have experience way beyond mine and have
already successfully transitioned to a Europa monowheel who will step
up w/ knowledgeable opinions and suggestions on how you might best
proceed.
FWIW, given what information you've posted, if I were in your shoes,
the first thing I'd do is join a local flying club where I'd have
access to aircraft that I've been familiar with...spend some time w/ a
CFI getting re-familiarized w/ airspace and radio procedures...and re-
awaken your piloting skills. Next I would get as much taildragger time
as I needed to become comfortable. Only then would I make an effort to
get some meaningful time in a Europa. IMHO, only after completing this
preliminary work, would time in a Europa be meaningful and allow me to
prepare myself for taking the left seat.
One of my mantras around flying is to "manage the degree of
novelty"...by that I mean to familiarize myself enough in the cockpit
so that I can handle most of the variables automatically and allow
myself to focus on the "novel" aspects of whatever I'm facing...it has
served me well.
Perhaps I've misinterpreted your post and have stepped over the line
in terms of offering some suggestions when none were asked for...if
so, my most sincere apologies.
Best of luck, and many happy landings,
Fred

Luc,
I admit near complete ignorance of the rules in Canda.
In the US, the FAA takes a dim view of using a homebuilt for
any training save that of the owner. Commercial use of a homebuilt
is also expressly forbidden, i.e., paying someone to rent their Europa.
While you are waiting for your a/c to be legal to fly, I would suggest
also getting low powered tail dragger time like a cub or champ.
More glider time would also be very helpful, but remember to keep
the nose up in landing (try to visualize a prop there!)
In the end, you will either find a volunteer to loan you a monowheel
(unlikely I am afraid due to insurance rules and accident rates), or
you will wind up training in your aircraft when ready.
Good luck,
Ira
