Gang,
I need a bit of help. I bought a new camera for the Kolb, a Countour HD by Vholdr. While the camera takes good movies, they can only be edited in Quicktime. They are finished as a mov. file rather than a AVI. file that I have been using before.

My question is, if I use this, will it be viewable by other computers. I read the reviews on the editing software, and it reads like a horror story by 2/3 rd of the reviewers. (Quick time Pro) Any one having any experience or thoughts would be welcomed.

Larry

Larry, if youtube will accept the format it will be viewable by anyone. If they can't take it try Streamclip.

Beautiful flying weather today in Noo Yawk. I got in a good ride this morning to my favorite sunday morning destination,
interrupted only by buzz jobs on a friend and my daughter's place. Coffee and conversation were offered.
Little Kolb performed perfectly and brought me back home.

Most people have Quicktime viewer on their PC, so, yeah, it's viewable by other computers.  If not, it's a free download.  So many videos out there are MOV, so it's one of the many standards.

Larry, I purchased Quick Time Pro a few years ago and as soon as I got past the short learning curve, it was ok.
But if you want to use the software that comes with Windoze, download Next Video Converter 3.5 (free)
http://www.nextvideosoft.com/
and then you can convert Quick Time to whatever you like.
My Lumix Digital camera films in Quick Time, but here is a sample of converting it to a much smaller bandwidth movie that I could post on our web page. The original Quick Time clip out of the camera was somewhere around 40 or so mb, but this is a conversion to a mpeg-4 (mp4) 10 mb clip that doesn't look too bad.

Thanks guy's, I appreciate the responses. I will bite the bullet and give it a try. This camera is pretty small, takes high def movies, but somehow my computer doesn't recognize it, so it will have to go back. Not too impressive, although they are sending me a prepaid shipping package.

The camera does not have stabilization, so it is going to be a bit of a challenge to keep the shakes out of it, but the color and clarity are superior to what I have been using. I really think at this time I should have listened to John Bickham however.

I use Media Player Classic. I get the version listed with k-lite. Get the full version. I play everything from RM, WMV, Quick Time, h.264, DVX, etc.

It is freeware and about 14 - 16 meg download. It works fine with all of the Winders stuff.

I was about to give up on recommending SUPER video converter when I ran into a run around trying to download the latest version. Turned out it won't download with Chrome and even with IE it was rather arcane to download. You have to hit three separate buttons to get the download going and you have to be careful or you'll get an evaluation version of another editor called AVS. That all said, it is a good translator program that made changing from .mov files from my little Nikon point and shoot cameras into .avi files that Movie Maker could digest. It, too, is freeware.
One thing I don't like about these helmet cams is that you never really know if you're shooting anything. I have an AT2K from Oregon Scientific and more than once I've returned with nothing. I only use it as a backup now or to take a second POV.
If you shop around you'll find there are many of the little point and shoot or better cameras that will take good video, I use a Fuji S1500 now, and having that LCD display on the back with the big red dot and REC in the corner is nice reassurance that everything is working.

Well guy's it has been an interesting afternoon. The makers of the camera that I bought (CountourHD Camera by Vholdr) sent me an authorization to return the camera for repair. The computer would not recognize the camera, none of the software would work without that.
I actually liked the camera and thought that it took good pictures, however my problems with the camera were compounded by having to use Quick time to edit the movies. I managed to retrieve them by using a card reader adapter. I could not edit them without purchasing Quick Time Pro, which with much trepidation I did. The program has little in the way of a manual, but after most of an afternoon of trial and error I did get enough of an edited movie to use. Unfortunately Quick Time was not able to read any of the music files or CD's that I possessed? so I couldn't add a sound track. I spent another two or three hours trying to find a fix for that and after three phone calls and quite a bit of time waiting on hold I could find no help at all. I finally tried to get a refund for a program that did not work, they of course refused, but gave me a number where I could talk to an , undoubtedly cute, Filipino gal who suggested that I needed to buy yet another program so that Quick Time might know what a music file was. Understandably, I declined.

I am returning the camera to Amazon rather than sending it in for a fix. Geeez, I thought Microsoft was bad, but Apple is worse, perhaps the translation from Mac to windows is the problem.

I forgot to add that I did download two or three programs that would convert the programs to an AVI file, however the quality of the result was no better than the little spy camera that I have been using, therefore it is much easier to just use it than do all that other crap.

I am going to try another camera, hopefully I will have better results.

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions on the downloads, I at least picked up a couple of good programs that did work just fine, unlike the ones that I paid for.

Larry,

I had the exact opposite problem when I bought one of those little bitty chewing gum size cameras you used at one time. I could not get it to work with my Apple stuff, so I returned it to Amazon for a hassle-free refund.

So Apple is not worse than Microsoft, but they are both loath to cooperate with one another.

My wife sat on her 4 year old MacBook a couple weeks ago and broke it so she ended up buying a Toshiba netbook for about $300 and had to go back to WinDOS. She was not happy about that but is acclimating. Once I downloaded Safari browser for windows she was ok with it.

Greetings,
I'm also having problems editing my videos. Wish I can find an editing program that will do the job.
Here is a video from my camera without editing.

This is the same video after editing using the program that came with the camera, lost the HD quality, screen size and sound.

I don't do a lot of videos, but, usually I convert whatever I've got (from a variety of devices and formats) using a video converter program to WMV, then I edit it with Windows Movie Maker.

I do have at least 2 other professional-level video editing programs, with a lot more features, but I've realized that I very rarely use any of the other features, and that WMM usually does 100% of what I need (for these brief, flying videos, anyway).

After I get it edited and saved as a WMV file, I use the video converter to change it to FLV, then I publish it on my own web site.  That way I have more control over it.  But I realize that most people don't have their own web site, and just use YouTube, and that's fine.  YouTube will pick up a WMV just fine.

The video converter program I use is:  Aimersoft Video Converter (http://www.aimersoft.com/video-converter.html)

Will, I use Windows Movie Maker and it does all the things you want and it came free with Vista on my laptop. It's available as a free download from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

All I can really say about it is that it works for me and is fairly well documented. Any thing I ever needed to know I found in the help files.

Will,
I haven't had any problem when using Movie Maker. Its all pretty easy and the sound is there. Of course the quality is going to suffer, but that is You Tube, not the program. If it didn't it would take forever to upload to You tube.

If Windows Movie Maker doesn't recognize the file type i use an open source program called Handbrake for conversion. It recognizes most file types and does audio as well as video.
