Here'sa deal: A feller has an early firestar, ~250 hours. Some nice
instruments, a 40 hour 503 DCDI, intake silencer, TN wooden prop. Trailer.
8.50 x 6 tires plus smaller tires. Think older Icom radio. Fuel totalizer.
New set of floats. VG's. Needs wings and tail feathers covered. $3500. He
has been trying to sell it for a while now. Came down from $5500. Has >
$7500 invested. I thought it was a killer deal but I'm not sure.
I am actively soliciting your opinions please!

Here is my opinion:
If you like it, why change the engine out? As set up now, you have plenty of extra power. A Firestar with a 503 is a great performing plane.
I do not have a lot of flight hours or years of experience, but I do have over 100 hrs in an underpowered Firestar. The last thing you want to do is fly a marginally-powered aircraft, no fun & dangerous. I'd stick with the way it's set up now, it's a proven design.

Sorry, I meant for my previous post to apply to this comment.

on my Zenoah 242cc G25-B, rated at either 22, 24, 26 hp (depending on state
of tune and whim of rater) with 2.5:1 reduction turning a 54x28 2-blade
wooden Arrow prop. Do you suppose a 200 lb feller could get off the ground
with this setup? |

The early Firestar doesn't meet Part 103 limits even with a Rotax 377 engine. In fact, a Rotax 503 is too much power for that 5-rib airframe although a later model 7-rib wing can handle it. The 377 provides plenty of climb performance for a 200 lb pilot. I don't think you would be satisfied with the 277 performance, but it would fly.
Just my opinion ...
