Richard,
First of all I want to thank you for taking the time to write that post.
That was a generous gift.
At this point in time I can't say how I will respond to the wisdom you have
freely shared. I did snip out that post and saved it to re-read a dozen
times and think about it.
It was my plan to get instruction up to solo before flying the plane, or
even recovering it (no skin on it now). I have plenty of stuff to do before
I worry about flying it. I expect that I will still be a nubie when I do fly
it (if I do). Yes, I had visions of practicing tail-dragger stuff and
taxiing before getting my solo-- but maybe I should just wait. Who knows
what trouble I can get myself into? I have plenty of space to park the plane
& trailer beside my house. I am thinking I will build an enclosure on the
trailer before worrying about fabric. Provided I buy the thing I mean.
Regarding the engine swap... I *know* this is not a project for someone who
has never flown. I don't know if I will ever use the Generac, or on what
plane. That project is more about my love of engine building and modifying
(which I am experienced at) than flying. I am attracted to the idea of
having 1/2 the fuel consumption of the 503 but I suspect actual fuel cost
will not be my major aircraft concern.

I believe I come across as a slightly eccentric screwball that is somewhat
impressed with himself. I can't respond to that directly, should it be the
case. It is true that I am eccentric.
I have always been fascinated by flying, like most young boys I guess. I
helped build a KR-1. My bro is an A&P and I have been around AC some more
because of that. My uncle had a plane I flew with. He also gave me rides in
gliders. My bud owned a 150. I flew that, TO's, landings, etc. Had to help
with the upkeep. I was a line boy for the airlines here while in college. I
have taken only a couple of lessons. Brian at Brian's Ranch (Southern
California Mojave desert) in a RANS 12. I worked as a motorcycle mechanic
for several years. Worked as a mechanic at a Saab dealership before college.
Took a BS degree in digital systems electronics, worked as an electronics
Eng in production line automation, worked for years as a
programmer/consultant for Novell stuff and business systems, before going
into Geographic Info Systems. I have an OK touch for vehicles... Have
operated all kinds of equipment and vehicles. Raced motorcycles in the 60's.
My hobby for the last 15 years has been my 4x4. Some parts on it are still
stock but that count is diminishing. Most folks would say that my 4x4 style
is conservative while traversing somewhat extreme terrain. I go where J**ps
just think about. The body on my 4x4 is still straight and nice except for a
'memory' on the side. All in all... I feel that I am a fairly cautious
person even though I may (legally) tear across the desert on my Honda
XR500R, spending 1/2 the time in the air. I am healthy and not all beat up.
My judgment can't be too bad for me to participate in the sports I do and
have done and yet still be OK. I know you didn't say anything about me or my
judgment... I am just thinking out-loud. Which is really useless because we
all have a blind eye to our real flaws. Time will tell, but I expect I will
do as well as most people in my flight training.
I will take some of your advice fer sure and start my training soon.
Thanks
GeoB

"I believe I come across as a slightly eccentric screwball that is somewhat

No, George, you honestly do not come across that way. I see you as a very enthusiastic new guy, who is doing exactly the right thing, IMHO, asking for opinions and advice about your ideas.
If you were of the eccentric screwball type you'd be one of two types,
1. Telling all present about how you've ALWAYS wanted to fly.
2. Telling all of us the answers.
I've run into the latter type before, at Boeing of all places. In the late 70's I placed an ad in the company newspaper seeking people of like mind to form a company sponsored hang gliding club. When I met with them, to a man, everyone had a collection of drawings and sketches of the glider they were building. To the question, "What are you flying, now?" I got a long winded, canned speech about the problems their "revolutionary" ideas were going to solve. To a man, not one of them took me up on the offer to take them flying so they could get some idea about the state of the art they were revolutionizing.
That being said, I stand by the recommendation to go learn to fly at once, but let me modify my response a bit. As soon as you've had a cold, hard look at the expenses involved JUST with training, both $time$ and money, and you're satisfied that this is for you, get someone to take you up in a Mk III or Kolbra.
At this point you will most likely be so completely hooked you might wish to get a trusted family member to have your power of attorney or permission to have a civil commitment done to the rehab center of your choice.
But seriously, George, after the first two items, join the EAA, both national and your local chapter. As it happens, there are two chapters in Fresno:
Chapter:EAA 376President:Doug Betts Phone:559-289-8000Location:Fresno, CA US Meetings:Last Tues., 7:30 PMMeeting Location:Yosemite Falls Cafe, 4278 W. Ashlan, Fresno, CA Email:doug(at)dougbetts.com (doug(at)dougbetts.com) Website: http://www.eaa.cc/
And:
Chapter:EAA 97President:Bruce McJunkin Phone:559-435-1379Location:Fresno, CA US Meetings:2nd Wed., 7:00 PMMeeting Location:Fresno Chandler Airport Terminal Bldg. Email:ebs0431(at)sbcglobal.net (ebs0431(at)sbcglobal.net)
See is they don't have a technical counselor willing to help you evaluate the Firestar kit. It will need to be registered as an Experimental Amateur Built ( it won't make weight with any engine you've mentioned that would be safe to fly, again, MHO) so you'll need to make sure the current owner has a paper trail from the original kit buyer, if he isn't that person, to him that he may then extend to you.
Best of Luck,
Rick

The big benefit of lower fuel consumption is increased range on the same fuel capacity. But 4-strokes have many other advantages as well (as well as some disadvantages too, mainly weight).

I have joined National and local. I am active and handling some of the club responsibilities.

It is.. has been flying for a few years (278 hours).

Is there ANY known engine that would be legal and safe? Anyone?
