Does anyone know what resin was used to make up the fiberglass fuel tanks?

I don't have any data at hand, Bradley, but I am 90% sure it's polyester. In any case, repairs can (and should, in my opinion) be made with epoxy. They bond very well together. Trust me, my cowling is half polyester and half epoxy!

Cheers,
Michel

Why do you recommend epoxy?

Well ... all the GRP (glass reinforced plastic) yachts are built in glassfiber and polyester. And all GRP hull repair kits are ... epoxy. The latter is much more pleasant to work with since it is odourless and doesnt't release toxic styren gas as polyester does. But epoxy is more expensive than polyester. I guess if price was not an issue, yachts would be built in epoxy and ... carbon fiber!
Epoxy is also more watertight. That's why many yacht owners coat their hull, under the waterline, with epoxy. When I was designing yachts, we used to add about 2% of the weight as "water absorbtion" of the hull, to find the final displacement, or total mass of the vessel.

Cheers,
Michel
