Page 24 of the Installation Manual for the 3300, last sentence says "Exhaust Gas Temps. - Nominal 1202 F - 1382 F, measured 100mm from the exhaust manifold flange."

Is that 100mm measured 1. "on the side of the pipe" 2. "on the outside curve of the pipe" 3. "on the inside curve of the pipe" ? ...or does it matter?

Or should I just be consistent from pipe to pipe?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike:

What that means is you measure DOWN from the flange - 100mm (3.936") drill a hole an insert the probe.  HOPEFULLY the EGT should read 1202 F (HA!) to 1382 F (HA!).
In reality what you want to do is have the probe located the SAME distance down from the flange.  Do NOT put the probe in a curve of the pipe. ALWAYS TRY to keep all probes as close to the same setup as possible.
When reading the temps... DO NOT set in cement reading between other planes.  When you read your TEMPS you are LQQKing for what is normal for your plane and CHANGES to that NORMAL.
The CLOSER to the flange the higher the temps.
The further away the lower the temps.
Probes on a bend ... WHO KNOWS!
If you read the installation instructions from the Gage Manufacture use their recommendation.
YES - your reading may be different.  BUT!  As stated before... ALL reading are ONLY a NORM for YOUR PLANE.  YRMV
It is BETTER to go further down than too close.
But what is too close?
Why?  Too close you will shorten the life of the probe. Higher Heat.
E.I. recommends 2.5" Down
JPI if I recall is the same.

I know, now you are really confused.  AND don't Lose Your Head Below the Window.

Sorry,

Barry

On my 3300 I measured down 4 inches and was into the collector tube , so I put my EGT probes down only 2.5 inches down. After a short time I moved #2 probe to 5 inches down on # 6 so that I had two operating probes on # 6. The two readings on #6 were the same. I then moves #2 back to its proper location and have not looked back. I expected to see a difference but in fact I saw none. If you use the 4 inch distance on all six cylinders, the readings for 1,2,3, and 4 will be from mixed exhaust gases. Larry P.
