Hi

As you should know, the standard Russian headsets are horrible!

I would like to plug my GA Headsets on the plane but I would prefer to keep
the original Russian plugs on the plane. So I need to build an adaptor to go
from Russian (5 pins)to western audio plugs.

Has someone the picture of the wiring I have to make to achieve this
adaptor?
Are the wires colors standards?

Thank's

Olivier

Salut Olive,

FELICITATION.

Didier

Sssskippy,
You would best be served to call Termikus in Lithuania for that advise. The
wires are color standard for the Eastern EU..white with Cyrillic letters and
numbers on their ends.

Termikas is on holiday until after 9 August. Although they will most likely have the wiring conversion information, Termikas typically installs the standard GA headphone and mike jacks in the airplanes they overhaul.

Lawndart,

I would recommend getting a conversion that uses the military one connection plug.
The reason for that is if you decide you need to get out of the plane in flight(since we carry parachutes), it is much easier.
If you forget to disconnect, the plug will come out on its own, and not pull you back into the cockpit by your head.

There are pigtail adapters to go from GA jacks to the U-92 military jack. That way you can use both GA headsets AND the military plug/jack in the cockpits.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Apparently YAHOO mail has some strange key combination that sends the message before I meant to, and I have unintentionally discovered it! Let me try again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

If anyone really cares, I have done both. I have the standard General Aviation microphone and headphone jacks so I can plug in a David Clark headset with ease, and I also have put in a standard military helicopter connector as has been described here. Basically the two are in parallel so that I can use either.

Be wary of military headsets (U.S. Military anyway) due to the fact that they are the wrong impedence for the Russian Radios. There are in fact “adapter cords†that allow their use if anyone wants details, I will send them to anyone interested. Rob Rowe has also done a lot of investigation on this issue, and I suggest that anyone interested contact him directly, especially for Balkan 5 model radios used in the 52.

As to bailing out:  Having worked with both of these connector sets for most of my life, I have to say that there is not going to be much difference. Yes, I do agree that having just one connector makes it easier to disconnect versus two, the fact is that pulling that ONE connector out of the socket takes a considerable amount of force. The smartest course of action is to simply take your headset OFF before bailing out. If the situation does not allow that, it will more than likely just be yanked off your head anyway. I can tell you from personal experience that if you use a standard headset and try some inverted spins, the dang thing just flies off your head so fast your would not believe it, and then manages to disappear into parts unknown. That is why you should wear a cranial cloth that mounts the headset and then with a strap under your chin holds it on.  THEN you will not pull it off your head, but will instead pull the plug out of the socket. Believe me, that small wire cord is not going to keep you in the cockpit when 200 pounds of human being decides to bail out, whether it be one plug or two.

Unless you are competing in serious IAC competitions, this issue is getting to be a little over the top, just my 2 cents. I’d like to ask.. just how many of us are doing that? How many of us are flying YAK-52’s, YAK-50’s, CJ-6A’s in IAC boxes and doing actual competition? My guess is not many. Most of the folks here are doing formation Red Star events, so how many plugs are on the headsets is just too much over the top.

Mark Bitterlich

p.s. As to figuring out which wire goes where... there are two wires for the headset and two for the microphone.

Microphone audio has voltage on it when you key the radio.  Use a meter. Key the radio. Measure for voltage on one of the wires. That will be microphone hot. Microphone ground is a ground. Use a meter.

Headset audio are the other two wires. Tune in ASOS and put the meter to AC and look for a voltage. Failing that, go to a store like Lowes, and look for their Telephone Tracker combo. It has an inductive pickup probe that will HEAR the audio as you connect it to the headset audio wire. It's a nice piece of test equipment to have around. About $70 for the tone tracker and inductive pickup probe.

The mike ground and the headset ground wire basically go to the same grounding point. But if you want to be perfect, use the inductive probe to figure out the details.

Failing that, hire an Avionics Tech.

Hi all

So , for the European pilots, I bought this adaptors : http://www.czechpilotgroup.com/detail/pj_zsh.jpg here: http://www.czechpilotgroup.com/ .
Very quick delivery, a mug as a gift J.

I am very happy to leave in the locker those awful Russian headsets! The adaptors, with good quality headsets, give me such a wonderful comfort! Lovely!!!!

Thanks for all your advises!
