I was looking at your engine installation last week ay Oshkosh. You have two (I think yellow or orange) items on each side of the engine that states something like "high voltage". I don't have this on my 2200 so I suppose this is an add on. What is it, an electronic ignition? Whatever it is I'm sure it helped you win your class in the race.

Hi Mike-
Those are the coils for the Electroair direct-fire ignition system.
Actually, the coils are black, but there is a yellow electrical
insulator on each one. Electroair had a display booth in Hangar C, I
think, and they had their "Electroair Test Plane" located near the
Homebuilt Hangar. They are currently close to having their STC(?)
granted for their unit for either Lycoming or Continental... or both,
I don't know how all that works. They told me they had just sold a
dual-mag unit to a Jabiru 3300 owner from Australia of all places.
This week I'm going to contact them regarding getting my MAP system
for my engine.....this will allow for ignition advance at high
altitudes, or for low manifold pressure situations, something I
haven't had up to now. When I bought my unit from them, they did not
have an engine to test on (I was the guinea pig for the Jabiru
engine), so they would not include the MAP sensor in my package. When
I get some testing done with the MAP included in my ignition system,
they can interpolate my information and start to sell the MAP's along
with the units they sell. That will make for a complete ignition
system which they haven't been able to supply so far for the Jabiru.
The advance curve that they will build into my unit will be set up to
be on the cautious side....one and a half degrees of advance per inch
of drop in manifold pressure, versus 2 degrees per inch drop on
"regular" engines. At Oshkosh, they had a display that allowed you to
see the manifold pressure drop, and the number of degrees of advance
go up....to a maximum of 40 degrees. Now I need to get one of those
advance readouts for my plane.....more lost panel space, but cool-
looking as all hell!
I think what happened in the race was that any would-be competitor
heard about the "high voltage" and was scared off from entering in my
class. : )

Lynn, You should talk to Electroair about sponsorship. You are an undefeated air race vet with their product. An endorsement from you after a race like that should be priceless.

It does sound pretty good if a few of the facts are left out, doesn't
it? : )
