The Jab engine manual has all these operating limitation parameters. I do
my mag check at about 2000RPM and the drop parameters I think are less than
100RPM drop and less than 100 from side to side. This is from memory but I
know the manual states these figures. I have these figures printed in my
engine run up checklist. I never get a carb heat drop unless there is some
icing in the carburetor. Not exactly sure why but I think it has something
to do with the Bing being set up as "altitude compensating."

The Jab engine doesn't drop like a Lycoming when you earth one side.
It's more of a sensation than a drop, on an analogue tach it's only a
quiver on the needle.
Something to do with spark plug positions I imagine. On a big ole gas
guzzler they are a lot further apart.
The carb heat again doesn't do much on the ground, both tests show a
little more clearly in the air.
I usually use 1800 as well to answer your question.
Regards, Clive

Hi Guys;
I recall from the Jabiru installation instructions the carb heat is always on so there should not be any RPM drop.
do not archive

What RPM are you doing your "Mag" Check at? What's a normal drop? I was
trying 1800 RPM and am not getting a noticable drop, also not getting a
noticeable drop when I kick in the carb heat?
Engine has about .9 hr of ground run time on it and we're still working
out some kinks.
I guess we call a "mag" check a coil or orgnition check on a Jab?
I'm using the Grand Rapids EIS and noticed that there are two sensitivity
settings on the tach, but I want to get some go no go parameters from some
folks.
Thanks

Not on mine. I am finishing my 3300 install and my air box has a diverter flap controlled by a push/pull cable I have installed.

Try your mag check at different, typically lower, rpms- 1100-1300 range will normally result in 10-30 rpm drop. Try it at idle or in cruise flight and it's pretty obvious as well. You should also be able to hear a change in engine sound even if no evidence showing on tach...

As to no RPM drop with carb heat application on the ground, I ditto that. I believe the low amount of air running over the heat muff helps cause this. You will notice an RPM reduction if flight with carb heat once you get flying.
Good luck,

Because the spark plugs are only a couple inches away from each other, there will be very little mag drop. Some of us have flown WITHOUT carb heat for several years, so dont expect too much from that either.
In short, it is not a Lycon engine with the plugs on opposite sides of the cylinders, nor does it have an ice-making venturi carb like the Marvel-Dribbler or Strombad.
I just check the switches while taxiing out and note if it is revving up on takeoff. If the one mag is not working, you will find it out quickly when you hit the switch, but you can have a dead one in the air and not know it.
