I'm looking for recommendations regarding a battery maintainer/charger for
the Odyssey battery in my RV7. What has everyone found to be the best
option?

Thanks!

Used a Odyssey from Jan 2003 till middle of 2009 in my RV and never needed a maintainer. Only changed it for a new Odyssey because I needed a new battery for my Harley so bought a new one for the RV-6 and put the old one in my Harley, it is still going strong.

Pretty much my experience, too.  I have flogged one Odyssey stone cold dead beyond any hope of recovery (master switch left on for weeks at a time) but all the rest have given me years of airplane service followed by years of lawn tractor duty without a maintainer.

I agree with the comment that if you fly often enough, a maintainer probably isn't necessary, but that's not the question you asked.

Bob on the Aeroelectric list recommends the Schumacher 1562A. It's about $20 from Walmart. It's something like 1.5 amps, so it is not a quick charger, but it will lower the voltage once the battery is fully charged. I currently have three of them for various things to keep the batteries charged when the snow flies!

Search one the Aeroelctric list here: http://www.matronics.com/search/ Use the keyword "Schumacher" and you'll get lots of hits.

My experience is similiar to Jerry's. My Odyssey was purchased in 2004 and
still in the RV-6A cranking an O-360 with high compression pistons. I do use
a Battery Tender sometimes. Only time I see it charge is when I have had the
master on for something while working on the airplane.

Since I have a Sony AM/FM/CD/MP3 player in my 6A and it draws a little current.....
I installed a Battery Hawk in mine. I generally hook it up the night before I plan
to fly but have left it disconnected for a week and had no trouble starting my
IO360B1F6 with 9.2:1 pistone.

I have one of these Battery Tender Juniors in my -7. The nice thing about it is that it stops charging and goes into trickle mode
automatically when the battery is charged.

Wade, I'm happy with my batteryMINDer though I'm just a year in with a new battery. Overwintered in the south with my RV9A on the tarmac in the snow. Battery stayed on the bench in my workshop.

I learned one way to destroy a battery during the build phase in the garage - let it discharge and then freeze.

Thank you gentleman for all of the comments.  I ended up procuring the $19.95 Schumacher unit from Wally-World.  My battery was nearly drained from testing and cycling all of the electrics during the building phase.  The Schumacher maintainer had the battery charged up full in roughly 6 hours and now is in maintenance mode.  At this point I’m not sure whether to leave the maintainer on or just what the best procedure will be.

Happy building/flying!
