In my kit, both lamps for the Landing/Taxi light assembly are identical.
What makes one a landing light and the other a taxi light? Also, I am asuming
that one of the screw connections on the lamp is grounded and the other goes to
a switch in the panel. Since they also are identical, does it make a
difference which is which?

Hi Jay,

As I undersdtand it, the inboard lamp is shielded from shining directly
in front of the airplane by the inboard edge of the cutout, therefore it
illuminates an area farther out in front. That designates it as the "landing
light". The outboard lamp casts more of its light in front of the palne and
is designated the "taxi light". Do you plan to wire and switch them
separately or connect them both to one switch?

I believe that most builders use the airframe for the ground return as you
assumed and it does not matter which terminal goes to ground.

I'm about to start on the spar so I haven't done the lights yet.

Ed, Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense. I plan to switch the lights
separately, but I might find that using both is more effective. By the way, I
have located my lights one rib closer to the fuselage.

I haven't gotten as far as cutting out for these lights yet, but I have
thought of putting them one rib closer to center as well... Has anyone that
has done this encountered any problems doing it this way?

Thanks in advance,

Randy, FWIW, my EAA technical advisor suggested the move, mainly to be able
to remove one of those "smiles" in the LE skin. He didn't think the location
was all that critical.

I think the idea was to place them as far from the cockpit as possible to
reduce the glare. The are out at the tip of the RV wing as well.
