Dear Listers,

So I could smell the disbelief in the air regarding my performance claims, so tonight after work I went up and did some testing. All tests were at the same altitude with the autopilot on, going the same direction (mostly South) with a Westerly wind over about the same 25 mile area.

One interesting thing that I noticed tonight that I hadn't in the past was what a dramatic effect exacting leaning could have on the speed for a given power/prop setting. A small adjustment in the mixture could increase or decrease the speed sometimes as much as 5 MPH.

Below is a table of the numbers I saw tonight. I've include the spreadsheet as well as photos of each setting from the EFIS PDF/Engine data.

All numbers on the EFISs are in MPH. The GPS GS is in the upper left corner of the PFD. The TAS is on the bottom right side of the PFD display. Indicated is on the left side in the middle of the PFD. Temp is in the upper left corner of the Eng display. MAP, RPM, and Flow are also on the Eng display shown as gauges with text.

An interesting thing I noticed that at 27.x MAP, adjusting the RPM between 2000 and 2690 had a 9.8 to 17.0 impact of fuel flow (7.2 GPH) and a 22MPH impact on speed. That's about a $32/hr difference.

Let the discussion begin... Wink

For one of your data points;
If you fly three different GPS tracks with the associated ground speed, you can use the NTPS spread sheet to calculate your TAS and the winds aloft.

If you fly four different tracks (about 90 degrees apart) with the associated ground speed, you can use the NTPS spread sheet to calculated your TAS, the winds aloft and the accuracy of your test method. Variables creep in due to changes in wind direction and vertical wind velocities.

Just a thought.

The calculated GPS TAS can be compared to the EFIS TAS to assess the EFIS TAS accuracy.
I have a Dynon D-10A with a Dynon heated pitot tube. The pitot/static system test can NOT be done on the Dynon heated pitot tube because of the pitot tube leakage.

This shows up in flight. During my first check, the Dynon showed 194 KTAS, and the NTPS GPS calculation showed 201 KTAS.

Although this was a very brief test taken during the autopilot calibration, the four legs allowed four different calculations of three legs using the NTPS spreadsheet. I was very fortunate to have been in steady calm air, because the 201 KTAS and winds aloft stayed constant.

Matt,

With those airspeeds I have got to ask you, "Do you have 12 inch numbers on the side of you plane??

Recently had my third pitot-static-transponder test on my 8 with the Dynon heated pitot tube with no problems...

12" numbers are required for an aircraft with a cruise speed of 180, or greater, KCAS (knots calibrated airspeed).

Van's Aircraft uses 8,000' density altitude for their cruise altitude.
180 KCAS (207 mph CAS) at 8.000' density altitude is 203 KTAS, or about 233 mpg TAS.

From Matt's flight data, he probably won't be required to have 12" high "N" numbers.
Depending, of course, on the Pilot Operation Handbook cruising altitudw and cruise power statement.
