Like I was saying. It doesn't meet type design. So you say, so what. Most planes don't meet type design. I'm ok with that too. But here you go putting on public record that you are putting a nose gear torque tube (FAA deemed critical component) in this plane and you're very proud of it hence the detailed paint job. Now, lets drift into the future a few years when that plane has been sold "Bubba and Buford". These guys fly as well as penguins and have a bad landing where the nose gear collapses. You can ask the both of them and they will swear they greased the landing. Keep in mind this is the age of :un-accountability." Did I mention that Bubba went to ACME SCHOOL OF LAW? It's one thing to alter the type design and not say a word or log book entry, but to paint an obvious incorrect part and install. Hmmm, kinda of like taking a drug test and forgetting to wipe the white powder off your nose.
What you are putting in your AG5B is a 702065-502. What is correct is the 702065-505. The reason for the -505 was because the 502 had its share of designed weaknesses. Even the spares that were produced for the AA series were the -505. What does that tell you.
BTW, I cant remember the last time I had to assume the "Grumman position" and say "Golley wez, its so perty down here, I thank I'll stay a while and honey, hand me my beer and make me a sandwich, cuz I like the scenery .

I didn't put part numbers on the internet as to what torque tube I was installing. You did. Thanks Garner. I appreciate that. Of the, oh, say, 10 people on this list, none of them would know by looking at it (except possibly Bob Stewart if he's still on this list) that it came from an earlier plane.
As for the later torque tubes being a better design, I'm not sure I agree. The early torque tubes used real metal-to-metal bonding techniques, not fuel tank sealant and extra bolts. I'm replacing a so-called 'improved' -505 that had failed. You yourself told me some of the AG5B torque tubes failed due to not being assembled/bonded correctly. Obviously, the extra bolts don't help that much. I was all for sending this -502 to you and getting it rebuilt or exchanged. Remember? I recall you telling me to just install it the AG.
Garner, seriously, how many times have you assumed the Grumman position?
True, probably 100% of the plane owners out there don't care what the floor looks like under the pedals. I've seen 30+ years of dirt, lint, wire ties, hardware, light bulbs, dog hair, hair clips, money, gum, and weeds all gummed together with spilled brake fluid (5606) under the rudder bars and torque tube. You're right, who cares? Who looks at it? Well, I do. As for the floor being painted gloss white: trying to wipe up spilled oil on a surface painted with rattle can flat black is almost useless. Maybe if it looks better under there, someone will bother to keep it clean.
Type design. That's a good one. If you install a Davtron clock, your plane doesn't meet type design. Moving the clock from where it was originally installed does not meet type design without an approved POH supplement. Crash with that and see if anyone notices. Painting the face (the side facing the pilot) of the prop with rattle can paint does not meet type design. Polished prop blades don't meet type design. All of the Cheetahs out there with 6 ply tires don't meet type design. Overlays. Leather interiors without a weight and balance change. Hell, the factory W&B doesn't meet it's on specs.
But, I'll have to agree with you. There are a lot of idiots out there waiting to sue someone. So, before the Project X plane is sold, I'll change the torque tube. Either that, or get a field approval.

Bob is good, but considering the last 5000 came painted black, I'm thinking just about anybody would suspect blue.

Same bonding process were used on all the torque tubes, The bolts were to strengthen the assembly and has done a very nice job. The polysulfide was not used as the bonding agent. It was used to seal the fillets arond the bond joints and the bolts.
I'm replacing a so-called 'improved' -505 that had failed. You yourself told me some of the AG5B torque tubes failed due to not being assembled/bonded correctly. Obviously, the extra bolts don't help that much. I was all for sending this -502 to you and getting it rebuilt or exchanged. Remember? I recall you telling me to just install it the AG.
I do remember a stumbling block of sorts,, what was it? oh, it was powder coating.

Ok, if an approval is accquired by STC or 337, wouldn't that be incorporated into the Type design? Another unrelated question, how can a supplement be required to the POH when the POH is not required for the aircraft? Can you just put it in the POH and leave it at home. Its in the POH as required.

Hi Ian,
I sent the rudder bars to be powder coated, but, just textured gloss black. A hammer tone black.
I started to clean the firewall and the material is so AFU that it was difficult to clean. It's fine the way it is. When I do the Cheeter (Cheetah/Tiger), I'll get creative with the colors.
