I drive nails through old hard drive for just that reason, then package them up with chicken poop before I put them in the trash.

 I've had no first hand experience, but I was told by a pro when I had problems with my old computer that most of what is on your hard drive can be retrieved even after a crash and total meltdown.  It may cost a few hundred dollars or pounds (a good way to lose weight, eh?) to get it done, but it may be worth it.  Along the same lines I've read recently about being cautious with what you do with your used copy machine, because there are those who buy them solely for the purpose of extracting lots and lots of info for the purpose of ripping the previous users off.

 unfortunately the old comp is now in a dump  somewhere. Maybe I didn`t pursue the matter vigorously enough at the  time.
