Hi everyone,



I have been looking at purchasing a europa but would like to know what the differences are between the classic and xs? There is a classic that has been converted to an xs except the baggage area. What exactly are the changes? How big is the baggage area in the classic? Also, is there any problems with transporting the plane on the trailer for say 2100 KM? The plane I'm interested in is on Barnstormers, link is http://asyouwill.com/europa/Home.html. Does anyone out there know this plane? Apparently it was built in Calgary, AB, Canada and the current owner is in California. I'm in Alberta also so would like to transport it home on the trailer if possible. What should a person look for when inspecting?

Tony,



My advice would be to find another Europa owner who built his own (ideally Kim Prout), offer to pay his expenses, and get him to do an inspection.

The main  difference is in the wings. Baggage bay extension with weight upgrade is available as a retrofit from the factory.

Why not fly it back to Alberta ?

Hello:  

Funny how memory kicks in when you see a picture. N24070 was previously built in Canada. I knew the builder, Ken Whittington of Calgary, Alberta, well. In fact he was the first Canadian builder who completed a Europa! He built it together with his son.   

   

I also knew the plane quite well as I visited twice for several days, painstakingly taking notes and measurements in his garage to assist my own building. I have many pictures from the construction given to me by Ken, or made on location myself.   

   

This is definitively a very well built plane. It was originally a MONO but after a ground loop and damaged expensive French prop, Ken did to conversion to TRI. He never regretted it. The only thing I am aware of is that it came in a bit heavy as he put a lot of extras in, but as many commented, very well built. Paint is a Endura 2 part epoxy and should last a long time

Hi Tony,



When Jack Acord bought this airplane, he hangared it at Livermore (KLVK),

except for the several months each year that he spent in Hawaii.  Terry

Seaver and I have been flying N135TD (monowheel XS, 912S, Airmaster, both

long and short wings) out of Livermore for the past 9 years and saw Jack's

airplane there often at first.  I haven't seen it recently, but the web site

you mention indicates that it is still here.  If you want to come to

Livermore to have a look at it, we would be happy to show you our airplane

for comparison to a stock XS and help you do an inspection.



If you are familiar with the baggage area in an XS, just imagine that the

bulkhead at the back of the cockpit is moved forward to eliminate the back

shelf in the baggage area, and you will have an idea of what the classic is

like.  I would not expect any major problems transporting a trigear on a

flat bed trailer, as long as it is well secured.
