Now, to get back to a forum topic, can someone speculate as to why
my 582-90 is using oil from the rotary valve reservoir? I've checked
for leaks, made sure the plumbing is correct and looked over the
factory drawings in the IPC. I can't account for the engine using
enough oil for the reservoir to go from max to min in about 4 hours.
I'm using up the last of the Pennzoil Air Cooled that I bought at
Lockwood when I took the Rotax courses in 2007. Ideas? In answering
kindly change the subject title so any answer won't go into the
archives under the BRS discussion.

Normally the oil migrates to the coolant, or vice versa. It sounds
like you've failed your rotary valve seal.

It does sound like a seal. The oil can only go so many places. It either is going where it is supposed to and if you know that's not happening then the oil thing left are seals or leaks where it isn't supposed to go. Are you getting any more oil deposits where they shouldn't be?

Nothing I can find. I checked the coolant, no evidence of it there. The only I can think of is that it's going into the combustion chambers and the plugs do seem a little dark, but there's no effect on starting or running. More searching, I guess. Thanks guys. Rick

Any extra soot or oil in the exhaust?

Rick,

I don't recall how much oil the rotary valve oil supply tank holds but it is not much, a few ounces at most. IMO, it is unlikely that that small amount of oil burned in 4 hours would make very much difference in plug color and certainly not cause any noticeable affect in its running.

If it is not showing up anywhere else, then it pretty much has to be going into the combustion chamber.

Yes, that’s what's happening. It's leaking past the crank seals into the crankcase and getting mixed with the incoming fuel/oil.

I found it. I warmed the engine all the way up and shut it down, I found a small drip at the 90 degree fitting coming out of the bottom of the engine. In flight it would blow away, I guess, and just get mixed in with the soot coming from the exhaust leaving no trace once I shut the engine off, post flight. Thanks, for the help guys, I'll fix the leak this afternoon and give it a try with a flight to the Ponca City Breakfast on Saturday morning.
