Hi y'all,
I'm kinda new to this forum. I'm building a IV speedster at the moment, want to place a Jabiru 2200 engine. Since the installation manual sais there should be 3x more air coming out of the cowl then getting in, AND I definitely want to use the (very beautiful) Kitfox front cowling, I am wrestling with some ideas:
- Would you think it might be possible to make a kind of movable cowling-underside to get more air out (like for instance Diamond airplanes have)?
- Would you think I just could 'close' a bit of the enormous air-intake that the Kitfox cowling provides?
- Should I use the Jabiru cowlings to steer the air, or just let it play along the cylinders?
Any ideas or answers would be appreciated a lot!

When I got my Kitfox IV, there was no cowl, and because I was
following Dave Jalanti's lead on installing a Jabiru 2200, I elected
to go with the "very beautiful" Skyfox cowl, and did not have to deal
with any of the cooling issues that you mention...it just sort of
came out right. Granted, it's not the round cowl (that I originally
wanted), but it's a *working* cowl, and in the end that's what
matters. Also, I used the Jabiru-supplied air ducts. These are almost
a must, in my book.

If you decide to go with the Jabiru cowl, you might want to get it through Avid/Airdale. I believe they are that same. I paid $450 pluss about $50 for shipping for mine. Take care, Jim Chuk Avids, Kitfox 4 (building) Mn

Quote: | I went with the original round cowl on my Kitfox when I installed the 2200. I previously had a Rotax 582 installed. It took alot of work to make the round cowl work. The forward cowl has two parts , an upper and lower section. I had to split both sections in half to widen the cowling. I also had to lengthen this front cowling by about six inches. After many hours of work I think the product came out pretty good.
After everything was completed I think I may have been able to add a few bumps to the cowling and not had to widen it. I may have been able to lengthen the back cowling the six inches and not had to do anything to the front cowling. I also went with Pete's instructions on the inlet and outlet demensions and things worked out real well although the engine gets fairly warm on hot, humid days of summer.

A Kitfox 4 that I saw with the round cowling and a Jabiru 2200 engine; the builder had closed off much of the front cooling air intake with clear Plexiglas. The open areas were where the Jabiru cooling ducts were located. You definitely need the Jabiru cooling ducts for uniform cylinder cooling.

I flew one a few years ago...... a KF 4 with a 2200, he spent a lot of time trying to sort out the cooling... I flew it it still ran too hot..... I do remember he had closed off the front too. Heat kills engines. I have instructed a few hundred hours on behind the 3300 and beautiful as that engine looks, and as smooth and powerful as it is, we had lots of problems in the training environment. We had 3 planes with 3300 and probably accumulated 1,500 hours on them. Once we went to 912, our problems went away.... Maybe as a hobby engine it will be great. Schools are tough on equipment. 912 seems to take it in stride we now have 4 planes with them and have about 2,000 hours running them.
