I was about to run a couple #16 wires to my Whelen HDACF strobe power
supply when I noticed that the installation instructions say that
"shielded wire is generally not necessary but has proven effective in
reducing the possibility of radio interference."

Sounds like their lawyers wrote it. The HV wires to the strobes are of
course shielded, but do the +12v and GND wires to the supply have to be
shielded too?

Tom,

I did just as you have suggested and have no problems not using shielded
wires TO the strobe power supply.

Shielding has a very limited effectiveness against
only the rarest of noise propagation modes. If the
device being powered up has passed DO-160 conducted
emissions, then there's no value in having the power
wires to that device be shielded. In fact, ANY device
that's shown to benefit from shielding of power leads
either as a potential antagonist or victim needs to
go back to the drawing boards . . . and probably
wouldn't pass DO-160 Conducted Emissions anyhow.
Don't worry about shielding these power leads.

I'm using aeroflash strobes, with non shielded wire. I'm gettng the whoop whop whine sound. I've kept the wires away from the antanna as best as possible. I've attached as close to the positve side of the terminal as possible and still the sound. It comes through with the intercom on or off. The aeroflash power supply comes with a ground lead, this is the only area that I have not used a return all the way to the ground and I regret it now, and they are at my wing tips. Should I have gone directly to the ground tabs with an actual wire, would this make a difference in the sound.

It takes TWO connections to LOOP. The fact that you
hear the noise with the intercom OFF sugests that your
headset jacks are not insulated from airframe ground.

Have you installed insulating washers on your headset
and microphone jacks?

I've only insulated my mic jacks. I guess I'll insulationg my headph one jacks too. Let me clarify this.... I hear the noise with the intercom on or off. When the intercom is off it is bypassing the intercom in failsafe mode.

Flightcom 403 w/ stereo, Garmin SL 30 radio, Aeroflash strobes

The SIGNAL wires are switch between normal and fail-safe
configurations, not the ground wires. It's the ground wires
of the headset that are probably sharing current pathways
with ground wires of the strobes that generate "the loop".

Went to the hangar today and tried with the mic and headphone jacks off of the panel ( in my hand to make sure they were isolated) . No luck, but a great thought.... NEXT? THis is getting to be a bummer.

Then the 'loop' is somewhere else. Since the interference
is detected with the intercom OFF suggests that the problem
does not lie upstream of the intercom but downstream. Do all
your panel mounted electro-whizzies enjoy a common ground?

I FOUND IT. Strobe power supply wires to close and parallel with com and radio wires. What type of interference is that considered? And does shielding help it?

Electro-magnetic coupling. See narrative on my first
mini-van purchase at OSH way back when. Pages 16-10 to
16-12 of the 'Connection.
And does shielding help it?

No.

This coupling mode can be broken by any one
of three ways:

Preservation of the "parallel conductors
configuration for inbound-outbound electrons
in either (1) the antagonist's power lines
or (2) the victim's signal lines or (3) increased
spacing between the two pathways as described
in the narrative on my mini-van and demonstrated
again by your experience cited above.

Good detective work!
