I thought I had a good sealer for the header tank plastic to fittings, BUT as you can see from the attached photo. The tank has only been in use 3 months. Any idea on the best stuff to use

Yikes! John Mcbean can point you in the right direction. Used the sealant that came with my kit (2004 vintage) with success. Better check those fuel tank fittings also.

George, The absolute best sealer for that application is Dow 730 Aircraft Spruce p/n: 09-00383. I finally broke down and bought a tube and haven't had a leak since. The only draw back is cost. It's over a $100 for a 3 oz tube with shipping. I keep it in the
refrigerator and hope it lasts. Someone on this list recommended it. I tried everything else 1st.

A very good product that some of the race car driver's use, auto mechanics, aviation mechanics and SLSA Mfg's is "Hylomar" Universal Blue gasket and joint sealing compound.
Use a film on the bulkhead plates,t gaskets or fittings all the way around and both sides. This stuff is very sticky so what ever you touch it is there until you use a little lacquer thinner to remove it. Let it flash or dry for a few minutes and assemble. Do not apply a glob as it will squish out and get into the fuel system and it will cause you headaches. A little is good, a lot is not better. You can buy this Hylomar on line from several sources as it is very common. I tube should be plenty.
I use this on all my leaks as recommended by a few Mfg's and have never had a repeat leak.

George,
After trying a half dozen sealants with the accompanying aggravation I finally broke down and bought the Pro-seal from ACS. It's the only one that I could get to work with 100LL.

I used the Dow 730 sealant years ago after it was recommended to me by an aircraft-builder friend who worked for Dow. I managed to get Aircraft Spruce to stock it. Though it's expensive, I have not had a fuel leak on anything I've used it on, including tank cover plates and square-port fuel gauges. I saw another friend put it on a tank fitting and then pour fuel into the tank immediately, no leak. It's always worked well. I've had my tube for 20 years - it's still in the frig and still just as good as new. I look at the price like a complete "gasket kit" for a lifetime of fuel systems. Sky Geek has it today for $78.

Never had a leak but it has solved many in 35 year and Hundreds of planes.

Mike, Thanks for that recommendation a few months ago. Dow 730 was the only sealant that didn't leak on my plastic header tank. I have mine in the refrigerator on your advice. Wish I'd known about Sky Geek. A/C was $20 more.

If you were to pose this question directly to Kitfox today their answer would be Permatex 9AR Tack & Seal Gasket Sealant. Worked for me.

The datasheet for Permatex 9AR says it is not to be selected as a sealant for strong oxidizing materials. Unfortunately, that's what ethanol is.

Hey Mike-
I'm no chemist but see the data sheet you linked says:
"Chemical / Solvent Resistance
The product retains effective properties in contact with automotive fluids, such as motor oil, transmission fluids, alcohol and antifreeze solutions."
...and the card pack guide also says:
"A high tack, pliable gasketing sealant and plastic and metal pipe fitting sealant. Resists gasoline, gasohol, kerosene, oils, lubricants, water, antifreeze, and mild acids. Designed to resist high temperatures, vibration, fuels and oils of today's engines."
So... what to think? In any event, recommended by Kitfox and leak free to date (knock wood) on my M-III panel and wing tank fittings.

What do I think? I think the Permatex folks might have inadvertently contradicted themselves a little bit. But Permatex stuff always seems to work for what they advertise on the package. So maybe you've found a good, inexpensive fuel thread sealant! Thanks for passing that along.
Over the years, I've run many tests on different things in gasoline-filled jars. Most recently I made some little cork balls for sight-gauge floats and painted them with a dark polyurethane paint. Glad I tested them. The paint was fine, but the cork swelled such that the balls would have stuck in the sight tubes; back to the drawing board.

Has anyone used SeaLube or Fuel lube for the tank fittings?
I've used it before and never had a problem.

I used the Permatex 9AR and I am having to redo all the fittings. One at a time they each let go. I am using Pro Seal and it works well. I do use 100 LL so it may make a difference.

I have used Fuel Lube and still do for the plumbing fittings. I didn't have
the poly header tank, though. Mine was an aluminum tank that a builder had
made up for several of us as I was finishing my first project.

That's interesting. Both you and Guy burn 100LL and the 9AR failed... I burn mogas and so far so good. Sure does make one wonder.

If it's all the same to you guys, I think I'll keep using my Dow 730. Seventeen years and not a hint of a leak.

I'm with Mike on this one. Just ordered the Dow 730. A fuel leak is
unacceptable.
