I'd like to suggest an additional possible problem to check. You say the mags are timed correctly. Is it possible that one of the mags was timed 180 degrees from top dead center? Stranger things have happened.

Guys, my neighbor in the airpark who is building an RV-9A, just began runni
ng his engine and it really runs rough - backfires,

black smoke, won't idle. He says he has set the timing properly.=C2- Any
input will be appreciated as to the cause.
Thanks,

Charlie, yes it's possible. I just learned the RV-9A owner had to remove the right mag due to some sort of interference. I suspect he may not
have gotten it back in correctly. We're going to start the engine tomorrow on both mags then see how it runs on just the left mag. Of course, if
the engine runs good on the L. mag, then we know the problem lies with the right mag.

Keep us posted

Are they slicks or bendix…they both have their own special ways of incorrect installation..

Just an update on my friends "engine problem." We started the engine again yesterday and switched from both mags to left mag. The
engine ran as bad or worse than before, so that was pretty puzzling. After some head scratching, I asked if I could sit in the plane and
start it, which I did. That was when I discovered the owner had the constant speed prop set on course pitch instead of fine pitch. When
I changed the prop setting, the engine ran great! Problem solved.

Thanks for all the input.
