I lost the key to the Project X plane.
As a rule, I keep all the keys either in the ignition or on a hook near my work bench. I've torn the hangar apart several times in the last 3 months. I have been through all of the little nooks and crannies that I normal hide things. I have been through the binders and folders that came with the plane at least a dozen times. Nothing. No key.
So, I took the ignition switch out to see if I could get the tumbler out and get a key made. I can't see how it comes apart. PLUS, it's very difficult to move the switch around; it's tied very tightly to the wire bundle.
My questions are: Does someone know how to get the switch apart? Is there another way to get a new key made? Is my only option buying a new switch?

| Most of the switches I've seen have screws that hold the phenolic/plastic back plate (where the wires attach) on.
However, I don't recommend taking the back off without disconnecting the wires. The 'shorting bar'(s) will fall out easily.

| Maybe .... call you friendly locksmith. I'm sure he has 'airplane rates'!!!

| Depends on how friendly your locksmith is! Gotta be a way to re-key.

Gary:
Try going to an FBO that does training.
My FBO has a key ring the size of a softball filled with keys.
Try a local A&P (other than yourself), I have a ring of keys to fit about half the planes at my field.
Count about 12.

A few weeks ago, I had 4 planes here. That, plus all of the other keys I've collected over the years. None of them would turn the lock.
I'll call a locksmith and see what he can do. I just can't imagine how he could open it. Good think I don't break into house for a living.

If you get a locksmith, make sure he changes the lock in the canopy (a royal pain in the ass) and the cargo door...I checked again and I have dont have any orphaned keys in my desk.
