Someone has already mentioned this but, SPOT is a near copy of APRS – amateur radio reprting system, developed by W4APR which does about the same thing for RadioAmateurs starting about ten years ago. he placed a satellite reporting module in the accompanying car to the US Navy carrying the football from Annapolis to West Point for the annual Army-Navy football game. We were impressed.
The next year he had miniaturised the module so that it sat in the footballer’s Hat!
That precipitated all these pachage company trucks sending their position to company HQ regularly (and telling the boss when they were still!!)
Since then a number of hams have used it to send their position home to the computer for record keeping. You can see this on www.APRS.org. Like Spot, thing is, where the dots stop is where the prang is.
