Got my new Ivo light 68" ground adjustable prop in. Sure is smooth on runup and love that easy ground adjusting method. Weather won't allow inflight test yet though.

The supplied 8mm mounting bolts work but are a little long for my taste. Once properly torqued, the threaded end comes within a few mm of touching the 'C' gearbox housing. Also, I'd feel better if they were drilled and I could safety wire them too.

So the question is, can one get shorter 8mm AN quality bolts with the heads drilled? Should I just use drilled AN5 bolts instead? Or, should I just add some washers on the face of the prop hub and not worry about safety wiring?

I'm don't claim to be an expert, but my opinion is that a washer shouldn't hurt, that is unless you have to many of them stacked up.  I've used a 8 MM lock nut to safety the bolts with no problem, although to be honest, I've also run IVO props with no safetys with no problems.  Take care,  Jim Chuk  Kitfox 4  (building)  Avid MK IV (flying)  Mn

You can use up to three washers under the bolt heads. Tex

Thanks Guy. Those prop bolts from Airwolf look like they'll do the trick.

The issue was 3 blade ultralight and 3:1 gears. Not a blanket "C" box ban, however, I have been running the 3:1 gears and ultralight 72" 3 blade for over 100 hrs an have not had any blade movement. While IVO cautions against the use of the 3 blade and 3:1, they tell you to use a small piece of the SS tape and put it across the root opening between the blades. If the tape cracks, you have blade movement and that is bad JUJU. I have not had a single tape crack. I was very anal about checking the bolt Tq for about the first 50 hrs, but after the initial run, and 2 subsequent tightenings, I have never had the blades loosen up on me.

Boy, you'd think they would too. I was watching mine today from the outside while my son started it. For a couple of seconds after the engine catches and the rpm is climbing to a smooth idle, the blades are whipping all over the place. I'd guess conservatively that the tips oscillate in kind of a 'Dutch roll' motion up to 4 inches in both the longitudinal and axial planes. Yet, after 3 hours with the new prop now and with no loosening of the bolts after torquing them on installation and once again after a ground runup, the above mentioned tapes that act as indicators of inappropriate blade root movement are fine.

I'd guess the issue here has more to do with the flexibility of the carbon fiber blades. They're just as 'strong' by whatever definition you'd like to apply as the wooden blades they replaced, but have different dynamic qualities. Did my first short cross country with the new prop today. Smooth as glass and very enjoyable.

Chris

The clutch takes every bit of vibration and chatter out. For cold starts nothing beats having a clutch on the prop!
