Hello all;
 Does anyone out there have dimensions for the slots in the fuselage sides of the CH701 for clearance of the flaperon connectors? Is there a good way to support the wings when test fitting to the fuselage. Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards, John

Wait to cut the holes until your wings are on. Once you mount the flaperons, trace the path of the connector using a sharpie through the connector hole on the flaperon size ( pre-drilled size only ).

Then identify the neutral position of the flaperon. If you search the list you can find the angle of deflection relative to neutral from just last week.

Good luck!

John, a good way to support the wings while fitting is to make stands out of 2x4s. One for the inboard and one for the outboard for each side. Leave them a little on the short side and then use foam or pieces of cardboard to shim them up to the final height.

To get the placement of the slots, I had the flapperons in place on the wings. I think I stuck a marker through the stud hole in the root plate of the flapperon and drew an arc on the side of the fuse. Next I rigged the flapperons at their neutral postion and marked this as zero. Using an electric level I then marked the up limit and down limit of the travel.

For cutting the slot I drilled out the upper and lower limits of the arc with a step drill being sure to leave a little extra room for the movement. To cut the slot, I took a scrap piece of extruded "L" and made it into a sort of compass. I drilled a hole to fit over the fuselage flapperon stud and cut slots in the "L" at the forward and aft cut lines.  I then put my Olfa P-Cutter in the slots and used the "L" to guide the blade while it scored the skin.

Hope this all makes sense.

Watch those step drills guys. Because there is only one flute the hole is constantly off center and rotating (moving) around where you originally center drilled it. If the exact hole position is important stop a little short of final dia. and see what you're off by. If its not acceptable, just work one side of the hole with your tool of choice.(vargus Burbit) I have not seen a 2 fluted step drill yet. If I do I'll buy it.......Geoff

All of my step drills are the two flute kind and don't wander too bad.. But, I ALWAYS drill a #20 pilot hole exactly where I want it to be and then enlargen it with the step drill. Even doing that it might wander a little so watch it closely.

Hey Ben. I guess I have to pay more attention. I'll see if I can find a couple this weekend. I usually start out with a #1 or #2 center drill...Geoff
