I went bird hunting this last weekend with my RV10. Got the bird but broke my wing in the process. I have talked to Vans and they do not have a quick build right wing in stock. It will be many months before they can build one. Does anyone out there have a quick build right wing for sale? I have attached pictures to show what happens when you have a bird strike at 170 mph.

Why not drill out the rivets and replace the damaged parts, or is it a parts supply problem too???

It would appear(from photos) the damage is confined to the leading edge
outside the fuel tank. I would expect that replacement of the leading
edge skin and a rib or two is likely what is needed. There may be some
issues with exactly how to do the riveting given the rest of the wing is
done, but likely most could be done conventionally with perhaps a few
cherry max rivets on the bottom side to finish closing it off. Or you
may be able to access it all by first removing the fuel tank, then
reinstalling tank after repairs. It would be surprising if there is
damage to the spar itself, which would be the only reason to consider a
full replacement wing. These kind of things get fixed on certified
planes all the time. More difficult on say a Mooney where wing skin is
continuous from bottom trailing edge all the way over leading edge back
to top trailing edge. In some cases on weaker spars like a Cezzna the
spar may get a splice if there is spar damage. RV-10 spar is pretty
beefy, so should be okay.

I forgot to mention that of course anyone that can build an RV-10 has
the skill to repair the damage fairly quickly, with ready parts access
from Vans. Of course we would like to just hand it to the insurance
company to get fixed, but that is likely to be much more difficult
given the higher quality control and expectations for experimental.
Then there is also the lack of need for any fed approval, lack of
need of licensed mechanic etc. Just do it to your standards.

Hi David,
A couple quick questions...
1) What kind of bird was it, any idea? How large, is
my main reasoning to ask.
2) How did the plane fly for you after that. Was it
noticeably harder to control, or just pretty normal?
Also, regarding the repair, I would tend to agree with
what Kelly just posted...you should be able to repair
it unless the spar is damaged. Personally, I don't
know that I'd bother just doing a small repair if I
couldn't do it and make it look perfect. What I'd be
inclined to do is yank the wing, buy all new wing
skins for the other half of the wing, and the affected
ribs, and then just reskin the wing. If you pull the
tank off, you should be able to buck the rivets
from the ends and you could end up with a wing that
looks and works as good as new.

Thank you for your comments. The spar is bent! The insurance company
recommended a full wing replacement. I am talking with a few local builders
to determine the best action to take.

OK, that does change things. I know some of us are more than a year
away from flying and have QB right wing on hand, only lacking whatever
extras you choose to install. I think the main issue is going to be
what Vans says about fit into the spar carrythrough that isn't matched
to the new spar, whether from one of us or from Vans. It Van's says
there is no longer an issue with the bolt hole alignment with spar
carry though, then I certainly wouldn't have heart burn exchanging my
QB right wing that hasn't had much more that attaching flaps, aileron
and control tube hardware installed. Where you are located certainly
enters the equation, as well as what Vans can promise about a
replacement.
I'd also want to know what Van's opinion would be as to straightening
the spar, what the degree of bend is. I know prop shops can legally
straighten props that have mild bends, and have means to do that. That
must have been something like Canada goose or turkey vulture to have
actually gotten enough force on the spar to cause a bend.

Could be an easy rebuild even with the bent spar....the
Van's RV-10 Wing kit is $9250.0 Figure maybe that
you would have to spend 60% of that ($5550) to buy all
of the components for one new Starbord wing. It took
me maybe 325 hours to build both wings, slow build.
Cut that by 25% for having done one before and you'd
be at 250 hrs for a pair, 125 hours for one.
125 hours could be done in a pretty short time...far
less than the wait for a quickbuild wing. Also, if
you factored in the parts that you could re-use, like
the control rods, control rod ends, brackets,
ailerons, flaps, and all the pieces that are easily
removable, you'd only really have to build the wing
itself and it would be a whole new wing. If the
insurance company let you re-use ailerons/flaps,
and some control rods and parts, you could probably
rebuild the entire wing in 100 hours or so,
and spend less than $5000 doing it. If you could
talk them into obtaining a couple quotes for new
wings from other sources, maybe they'd cut a check
for >$5000 and you could end up with getting some
money back for the time invested, too.

They're around $1,300 from Vans and I purchased a second one in the process of acquiring a friends kit. I'll be happy to make you a deal for it because I'm not going to be needing it.

David,
Sorry to see you are going to be down for a while. But good
airmanship to bring her home safely. I would love for you to respond to
Tim's question when you have a few minutes about the flying
characteristics of an RV-10 after the damage occurred. BTW the worst type
of bird to hit is an American Eagle (the AA type).
Thanks,
Robin

Kelly,
Vans says no problem with the alignment. I did not talk to engineering to
see about straightening the spar. My insurance adjuster was not in favor of
it, but that doesn't rule out the possibility. Vans told me it would take 4
months to get a quick build right wing.
I am in Kerrville, TX (kerv). Let me know where you are, the info on your
quick build and if you think you are willing to sell.
Thanks,

Hey David,
I've got a quick build wing that I won't get to for at least a year ... but
I'm in South Carolina, see if you can find one closer.
Also curious about Tim's questions.

Just spoke with Vans and they say this is a pre-punched airplane and all parts match up perfectly.

If you do discover that you need a new carry through for match drilling, let me know.
They're around $1,300 from Vans and I purchased a second one in the process of acquiring a friends kit. I'll be happy to make you a deal for it because I'm not going to be needing it.

Thank you for your comments. The spar is bent! The insurance company
recommended a full wing replacement. I am talking with a few local builders
to determine the best action to take.
