Kolbers,
After much propeller cutting, the FireFly is back in the air. Following the
idea that a longer propeller was better, I purchased a new IVO ultra light
prop. I proceeded to cut until IVO said not to cut it any more and found
that the best the FireFly could do was 40 mphi. Went back to the old medium
pitch IVO, cut it to 50 inches, and the FireFly flew much better. The engine
is topping out at 5,700 rpm and developing 24 hp. With EGT at 1,150 and
running wide open the MZ34 burned 3.0 gph, and the FireFly was cruising at
55->60 mph true. Climb out is from 300->500 fpm. The fuel burn should come
down a little as the EGT is increased.
The nice thing about the MZ34 is that it does not over power the FireFly.
In flight vibration is greatly reduced due to the very low inertia
propeller, and the double isolation engine mounting. Throttling back to
5,000 rpm, the FireFly cruised at about 50 mph. Noise level is much reduced
from the Victor 1+
Went over to fly the medium pitch IVO that was cut to 48 inches, but I had
failed to plug in the battery charger and the battery was down. While I was
there, I weighed the FireFly and it came out to 215 pounds and this included
the seat cushion and cheek board.
On my way to Canada for a visit. When I get back, I will fly some more test
flights, and inquire about a larger belt ratio drive from the engine
supplier. While I was at the airport, I washed the FireFly. When ever I do
this I slap the top of the wing on the rear top outside corner. Did not like
what I heard. This winter I will have to bring the wings home and repair
broken braces. 268 flight hours on the airframe. While I have them home, I
may look at adding some droop wing tips.

Good for you, Jack. 215 lb. is a real accomplishment. A local manufacturer had to resort to carbon fiber just to get his design down to the ultralight limit and their airplane sells for $25K because of it. If the good folks at TNK followed your example they'd have a real contender. Nice job and a real inspiration.

Currently I weigh about 186 pounds with flying gear on.
After returning home, I went over to the airport to try out the latest cut
on the propeller. Even though the battery had been on the trickle charger,
the battery was too low to start the engine. Since I am trying to save
weight, I have removed the hand pull starter. Looking for another battery.
May have to learn how to hand prop it.
The propeller matching to engine has been interesting, and expensive. The
ultra light IVO does not seem to be nearly as efficient as the medium pitch
IVO.
