Hi All,
My firestar 2 with HKS engine is aproching 200 hrs.
This morning I found a 2in crack in both sides of the 1in square tube that the wing fold fitting
bolts onto--- The carry through tube for the rear spar--- the crack is right below the rear engine mounts.
It is on the top forward edge of the 1 in square tube , all the way through the wall of the tube. after I thought
I saw a crack I used dye penatrant -----no doubt there is a crack on both sides of the air plane.
If any of the other HKS users has a simular crack and maybe knows what would be a good fix, please
E mail me or the list. Thanks
Frank Goodnight

Frank,

With cracks such as you describe, I would think the factory ought to weigh in on your repair, for
two reasons.  First, to make sure you get it fixed correctly so that it doesn't happen again.  Second,
to consider sending an official A/D (airworthiness directive) out to all Kolb A/C owners to inspect for
similar cracks.

Could you take a couple of pictures of these cracks, and share them with the rest of us?

Frank,

Sounds like you're on the right track!!  Fortunately you found the
problem before any further damage was done, and there's NO doubt
Denis will get it figured out and get you on the correct path to get
it fixed good as new (or better).

Mark, Since there is no such thing as an airworthiness directive (AD) for an experimental aircraft and the braces for the motor mount on Frank's airframe are apparently not standard Firestar, either, not to worry. All TNK can do is issue a heads up and it will be up to owners and maintenance people to try and nip this one in the bud.

I agree that the factory wil probably come up with the best solution for the HKS installation. When we put the 582 on the FSII, the factory felt that it was too much torque for the FSII upper fuselage structure, so we added some external reinforcements to take the torque loads.

This is probably overkill, but on the other hand, this was one of the few portions of the fuselage structure that did not get distorted in the crash...
