Yet another wing locker question.

Fellow listers,

I'm building the CH 601XL with the newer (read goes further back)
baggage area behind the passenger compartment.

After reading various problems, questions, and issues with the
wing lockers (water intrusion etc) I'm beginning to question if
I really need the wing lockers.

Can anyone who has finished tell me if I really need them?

Do you have issues with CG when using the baggage compartment
behind the seats. It would seem there is enough room other than
for extensive camping expeditions.

Do you really need the extra space the wing lockers provide?

Has anyone retro-fitted the lockers after building, and how much hassle
was it to do?

It would save time to leave them out... Build quicker, fly sooner.

Thanks in advance

Allen,

Yes. You should put in the wing lockers.

Although my wing lockers have a water intrusion problem, I use them all the time. They are located at the CG and carry up to 40 lbs each in my factory-built SLSA, a total of 80 lbs. The baggage area behind the seats is cavernous, but is limited to 40 lbs total. Without the wing lockers you are limited to 40 lbs of baggage. With wing lockers you can carry up to 120 lbs of baggage. Of course you are limited by the useful load (mine has 591 lbs), but in certain circumstances you will be glad you have the extra baggage capacity.

Hi Allen,

I have built the wing lockers in two of my three wings now. They are
a bit of effort, but not outrageous to build. The biggest problem is
there are no instructions, just drawings.

I think you would be best off to include them in the first pass. It
would be difficult to add them after riveting the wing skins.

Whether you need them or not is a decision I can't make for you. I
liked the extra space right at the CG. Also I opted for standard
fuel tanks so I have plenty of weight allowance for baggage. I don't
really plane to go camping in my plane, but that is always a
possibility. The wing lockers might also be a good place to store
those things you only need sometimes like tie downs, chocks, or extra
fuel cans.

Good luck,

Paul

Hello Allen,

as you see from the other thread I'm nowhere near finished. But not long ago I had the same question as you. Yes it is more complicated to build, yes you may have (solvable) problems like locker door bulging in flight. However, I asked Viktor Strausak, a former military pilot and Swissair Captain. Located in Switzerland, he built the most perfect 601 I've ever seen and flies it all around the continent. He gave me a demo ride at a local fly in. The HDS was still packed with their camping gear. All Lockers stuffed up and with almost full long range tanks we were only few kilos below full gross. With its 80hp Rotax it was certainly not a rocket any more but as agile as a plane can be. Viktor dropped a wing and turned her "on a beer coaster" with no effort. He said, "You need the wing lockers!" And indeed, I would cut down the plane in a strength where it is hard to beat: its hauling capacity. See previous post for numbers. I am not aware of a Rotax 2 seater (other than Heintz design) that has legally more loading capacity.
That's why I will build wing lockers. Some day I'll be glad to have them. For what it's worth (0.02$?)
