I do the fueling, airing the tires, windshield clean ......... Shorted
fuel, damage around the filler, wrong fuel ..... the possibilities are
endless!!! Nobody will have the attention to detail that you do. Why
wait 'till the lineboy (or girl) dings your wing before you do it
yourself???

I watched a Piper get fueled in pouring rain (I was waiting for weather
to go through so I could continue on) .... the lineboy removed the cap,
went to get the hose, fueled, rewound the hose, and then put the cap
back on. How much water went in the tank??? I don't know, but I told
the lady at the counter what happened, and she pointed out a gentleman
sitting in the lounge reading a magazine ..... so I told him too. His
answer: "Oh, that's OK, I'll sump it before I go." He did ... quickly,
and shortly after the bill was paid and then he left. Hope he made it
home safely.

NEVER let a FBO move your plane or fuel it. When I fly to the "full
service" FBOs I always call ahead and tell them I will taxi to parking and
if I get fuel it will be right before departure. All FBOs have honored my
request.

A long time ago I let an FBO fuel my 8A - once. I ended up 7 gallons short
of full tanks on a leg that I really wanted to have the reserve. I noted
the disparity between indicated fuel level (once I burned off some fuel to
get into the indication range) and fuel totalizer so I knew then I was
shorted. No big deal but a good lesson learned.
