Hi,
Before you consider a flight to the Bahamas, you may want to consider
that the probability of surviving an emergency landing on water in single
engine aircraft like our birds is about 50%, unless the pilot has had
special training. That figure comes from an AOPA article written
by an expert for such landings.
Given this statistic, I avoid flight over open water outside gliding
distances of shore at all cost.
On a more cheerful note, if you are considering an autopilot, you may
want to look into the DigiTrak by TruTrak, which has turned out to be
a terrific addition in my plane and was highly recommended by several
friends.
Happy flying,
Klaus

Actually, the survival rate for ditching a small aircraft is closer to 90%, it's what happens after the ditching that kills most of the rest. Most people get out of the airplane alive after ditching only to drown or die from exposure soon afterwards for lack of proper survival gear.
