A customer of mine had a mishap at the Hemet, CA airport.
From the looks of it, the cotter pin had sheared and the castled nut came off. He took pics of the incident and sent them to me. From what I could see, there was some damage to the wheel fairing, the 5/16 inch axle bolt was bent, tire was scraped, and little else.
The mechanic at Hemet put it back together.
He flew it from Hemet to Auburn.
One look and I knew something was wrong.
Here are the parts as removed. What's missing?
It's a bit hard to tell, but, if you look at the left dust seal, you can see it's badly deformed. The entire assembly for both sides is damaged. The hub is damaged.
Good news is, the nose gear fork wasn't damaged.

Uh, where's the axle? Hard to miss THAT on reassembly!

I know. Thing is, the pic my customer took at the time of the initial disassembly shows the axle.

Well, obviously the axle is missing! Your photo doesn't show it very well but the adapter/spacer (LH side) that has the flat "milled" off one side to prevent rotation against the nose fork looks like there is a large hole that is egged out or worn from the axle bolt, I assume. Are you sure the axle was installed?
