Hello all, I am new to the list having just purchased a -55M.  Can anyone direct me to the people that have the scuba-tank hook up/schraeder valve regulator unit.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill, I would recommend getting the "frog" from WLAC ( http://www.wlacrussianeng.co.uk/main.asp?ID=4&Product=768 ), then getting a scuba tank fitting that has the high pressure side only with a bleed-off thumb screw on it. You need the bleed screw to release the pressure from the hose when you're done filling. If you don't have that, the thing will be ballistic when you release the bayonet from the airplane. You can have the hose that goes between them made to a convenient length at any hydraulic hose shop, and they will also have any of the adapting bits you need to make it go together. If you want to get fancy, you can put a gage on there as well).

I know some planes have the schraeder valves installed as well. If that's what you have (and it was retro-fitted), you may not be able to use the original Russian fitting. However, you can probably get a tank-valve style fitting from NAPA that will do the trick, and then you adapt it to the scuba side accordingly.
Jill Gernetzke at M-14P, Inc. (928) 681-4400 or George Coy at Border Air (802) 868-5633 might have an assembly all ready to rock.

If you have access to a standard scuba tank and regulator you can unscrew the hose for the pressure gauge and screw in a hose and adaptor to fit your Yak. The pressure gauge is the only HP outlet on a scuba setup.

When you have charged up your Yak, turn the scuba tank off and release the back pressure through the scuba mouthpiece.

With this setup all you need to carry is the adaptor and HP hose as a scuba tank and regulator are generally not too hard to get hold of.

One could also install a $5 Schrader valve in the external air fill port
cover. Remove the valve core since it is not needed. Then wherever you
go you can usually find a compressed air or nitrogen bottle with a screw
on Schrader valve adapter.

I have the Schrader valve installed on the airplane.  My concern is putting 3000psi into a 700lb system.  Does anyone out there know how much pressure is at the regulator on a scuba system?

As far as I know this depends on the size of the bottle….big bottle 200 bars (2900 psi….) or small bottle 300 bars (4300 psi)

The 1st stage (connected to the bottle) of an ordinary regulator can handle easily 5000psi or more. I have pony tanks that are rated for 3600psi and it was common practice for us to often over pressurize our low pressure steel tanks to over 4000psi. Normal rental tanks are aluminum 80 cu-ft and 3000psi. The 1st stage basically drops the amount of air going to the 2nd stage (part going into your mouth) to about 150psi. The bigger concern is the tank. Tanks are rated in psi. Divers normally care more about volume then psi

There is normally 3000 psi in a full tank . The SCUBA regulator has one port that is for the pressure gauge and this port is unregulated .
There are usually three other ports that are regulated to aprox. 125 psi .Even though you are connecting 3000 psi to the system you controll
the rate of flow with the tank valve .This allows you to monitor the gauges in the aircraft . If you fail to turn the valve off at the proper
pressure the normal overpressure valve in the aircraft will dump this excess pressure.

I have a gage on my filling apparatus, but still the airplane pops off when it's had it. No worry there.

This has never been a problem for me ... all I do is slowly open the main valve on the scuba tank ... you can see the pressure build up on the gauge in the cockpit. The pressure relief valve will pop off if the pressure exceeds its maximum.

Same for me
I open slowly the valve of my 6L and 200bars bottle and stop a little before 55 (50)bars
The full pressure is build by the compressor unless you want to test the release valve of tour plane which shall be calibrated around 55 bars.

You may want to build pressure in your safety air system then don't open your main air valve and there will be a shuttle valve directing the pressure im the safety bottle. (hope my English is fine!!!)

Don't open too fast or you will blow your system up. But if you do it normally there is no risk.

Just open your mouth when disconnecting the bottle house from the port as there is a loud noise of air release and you don't want to blow tour ears also....
