My left-side rear passenger was getting out of the plane after me and when he was on the step it broke at the upper weld. Only slight damage to the skin when the step pressed against the side before it broke completely off. Going to half to get access to the bolt to remove the remaining piece and repair it. I had already riveted the baggage floor on when the discussion began on this list about putting an access cover so you could get to the bolt but wish I had done that before. If I was starting over I think I would not only but an access cover there but put a nutplate there instead of a lock nut or maybe weld a nut on the bottom of the receptacle in the plane.

I knew that this was a problem area (had a problem with my Piper) so I did the access plate hole which provides for access to the bolt - plus an inspection cover for annual

Yep these steps from Vans are problematic, A Friend had his step on a RV-7 fail also. The welds are not strong enough!!

Mike, did you trim the edge of the doubler adjacent to the outer floor rib, or did you run the doubler between rib and floor?

Wish I had done that. I bought 2 access plates from Vans but got lazy
and decided to "follow the plans". Perhaps a llusy excuse in this case.
Has anyone installed the plates after finishing the steps and floor?
Comment on difficulty - the timing is still good.

Yep, I agree. My friend across the hanger row had both of his steps crack at the upper weld; I had the passenger weld crack at the same spot on my ‘nine’. I removed mine (no small feat --- address this possibility during construction for access!!!) took mine to a real professional welder. Told him I wanted a gusset added for strength on the repair weld. He studied it for awhile and said he wouldn’t advise it. Something about transfer of force and it would just crack again somewhere else. He rewelded it and said I probably wouldn’t have any further cracks, and I haven’t.
Called Van’s and guess what? They hadn’t heard of the problem…

Attached is picture of the doubler plate for bolt access hole. the whole job took about 4 hrs in all. Remember that the side panel fits here so check and fit carefully. Note that the doubler is cut away. As I recall these are the same pieces as the pitot access plate on the wing.

I installed my access covers last night, and they look just like the ones in the photos above. Only difference is that I put a bit of a joggle in the doubler where it runs under the rib, but perhaps that isn't necessary.

I think that you are correct and the plates are actually from the stall warn access plate not the pitot access plate

Just installed mine a few weeks ago. I will be buying some thicker round and streamline tubing when it breaks down the road. The welds did not have good penetration. Thicker tubing would also help prevent hole elongation. Van's probably saved us $10 and 2 lbs by using thinner materials.
