Ok, so I'm a bit lost on the wing flap ribs and their placement. I sorted them all out using the plans, but think I was sent too many of one side and not enough of the other. I was wondering if it matters which way the inside flap ribs face. The outside ones (ribs 1 and 7) on both side are opposite each other and look ok. The inside ones however all point one way on the left flap. On the right flap most of them point the same way as the left flap with the exception of one, it faces the other way. I took a square and made sure I had the 90 degree angle on top so the angled portion is on the bottom as they lie on the bench. I included a pic to show how I have them laid out. Anyone know how these are supposed to be installed within the skins?

Hey Mark, sorry it has taken so long to get back to the list. I'm just unpacking my flaps and ailerons. I'll compare what I got with your picture and get back to you tomorrow. Have you called Zenair?
From looking at the drawing 640-A-4, I would say ribs 1 thru 6 solid surface inboard and rib 7 solid outboard.
Hope your Christmas was Merry and you New Year will be Happy!

So I unpacked and laid out the ribs I received. The arrangement is based on the 90 degree marking that Zenair placed on one corner of each rib for reference.
It looks as though Zenair doesn't much care which way the internal ribs point, just the ones on the ends.

Thanks Craig,
By looking at the drawings, it would seem that structurally it shouldn't matter which way they face. But the drawings DO specify which way they should go. I did call Zenair, but about something else. That was 3 weeks ago and still no reply. It is the holidays however and they ran and grabbed a -640 specialist to answer my questions. I didn't ask about the flaps because I hadn't realized the problem at that point. I am ready to install the ribs into the right flap. Everything is pretty straightforward. I'm just being cautious about the hinges. I'm not happy with the way they ended up on the stabilator trim tabs. I want these to be better, but don't yet have a good method for doing it.

I think I had a similar problem with my trim tabs. I put in the specified shim, (actually mine was just a tad thicker) between hinge and tab skin. But the travel on the tab side seemed a bit cramped, due to the spring back of the tab skin.

So I finally spotted the definitive answer for the flap rib orientation question. DWG 640-A-5 R3 Flap rib table. Ribs 1 and 7 show 1R, 1L in the # reqd column. Ribs 2 thru 6 only show a number, no RL reference. I doesn't matter where they point.

Cool, thanks for that Craig. I had to put the flaps away for a bit and move onto the ailerons because Zenair sent me the wrong size piano hinge!! They sent me two sets for the ailerons, none for the flaps. I called and they are supposed to be sending me the correct set at no cost. We'll see. Oh, I got the CD also. give me a few days to go through it and I'll let you know what I find out.
