I am ready to hang an engine on my L-IV project (not-pressurized) and am agonizing over the choice of engine. I have a good grasp on the problems with the Enginair V8 conversions a few years ago but is there ANYONE out there who has successfully hung one of the GM LS V8 engines on a Lancair IV (or Legacy). Alternatively is there anyone who has unsuccessfully done so and is willing to talk about it.
Thanks

I saw a v-8 on an ES a few years ago at Copperstate, but haven't heard
any more about it.

This one resulted in a fatal.

There was an IV for sale on Trade-A-Plane a few months back - sorry no link available.
The guy at what used to be Vesta Propeller was building one with his prop. Highly doubt that was ever finished.
A close second is the Wheeler Express guy who crashed and burned in a Texas field a few years back.

If you like to tinker this may be fun - don't do it if you really want to buy gas and go flying.

Here's a picture of the wheeler. The person who took it doesn't know a Chevy from a Ford from a Lancair or Wheeler.

There is a guy at Marana Regional Airport just North of Tucson, Arizona who installed a Corvette V8 in his ES. I just spoke to him and looked at his plane last week. He purchased a new "crate engine" from Chevy for a total price of $6,000.00. Much cheaper than a Continental IO 550N. I am currently building an ES and the Continentals are really expensive....like over $40,000.00!!! He said that the Chevy is heavy on the nose, (of course), and because of that, he approaches with more speed across the numbers. He is using a composite, electrically operated variable pitch prop. Don't know the brand. His biggest problem was cooling, so, he installed another radiator below the firewall, (on the bottom of the plane), and built a scoop for air intake. It looks a little odd but solved the over heating problem. He uses non-leaded auto fuel without any problems. There are no mixture adjustments....the computer does that for you. He has over 600 hours on the plane and seems to like it.
Hope this helps.
