|
|
I burned my choke cable in half. First I am amazed that the choke cable would burn in the first place. Second, I am embarrased by the cause, but I thought it would be benefitcial to share what happened.
The accident happened Sunday evening after a long strech of building. There is an LED dashboard light that was disconnected and I wanted to put back in. I connected it to the ground then to the positive bus terminal ( probably my first mistake ). The bus terminals use nuts to secure the terminal end, so I had to use a closed end wrench.
The wrench got hot in my hand after a few seconds of tightening and sparks flew off. At that point I realized my mistake of leaving the master on.
To make matters worse my choke cable, which runs near my bus, ignited. I am not sure if this was from a spark or if I accidentally arced the cable housing with the wrench while pulling my hand back.
The choke cable burned very brightly for a few seconds . The housing line was slightly scorched, but the cable severed in half.
So I have a few questions about this. First, has anyone else had a choke cable fail? Has anyone else had the exerience of the Zenith supplied cable igniting. For a cable to be Part 23, would it need to survive an incident like this? Finally, would wrapping insulation around the housing be a good idea to contain any future failures or mistakes?
Thanks,John Marzulli

Well, the cable is metal, metal is a great conductor of electricity and is our case this metal calbe IS "grounded" to the engine, so if the wrench (posiive charged) toches it... FSSSsss
Probably a covered cable (like the ones in bicycles) cound have survived this one, but in a cabin fire, the burning plastic will choke you...
I will stay with the original one and be extra carefull next time.
Always disconect the battery (not only cut the master) before working on the electric system.
You are lucky the wrench didnt touch any of the avionics or EIS conections,
good you didnt burned your hand.
I will advise to check all the related electric conections and electric cables for weakening.
Gary.

John
The choke cable did not ignite,it acted as a toaster element until it finally got hot enough to melt and break the connection. The liner inside the cable is what was burning. you are fortunate that it didn't burn up the plane. Your battery has enough amps to act as a small welder. Lesson learned!!!!!
