To follow up on George’s mail, there is in theory a light aircraft side of Sukhoi, but I see virtually nothing from them, and their main activity seems to be trying to get Western Sukhois back into Russia to have “Lifetime-extensions” at huge prices! Fortunately we managed to get all the paperwork for these extensions; now have them approved by EASA; who control all aviation in Europe, and so that is how we extend the life every six years or so.
The Sukhoi Military Trainer was the Sukhoi Su-49 – of which a prototype was made, BUT, to the best of my knowledge never flown. It looked a very nice aircraft, and was very light - 850 kilos, but looked similar to the new 52 – similar type of canopy; similar retractable gear.
I understood that it was rejected by the Air Force, who wanted all its flying qualities, but could not accept an all composite aeroplane for rough military use, and the problems of repairing localised damage.
Similarly it had the “Zvesda” pilot extraction system.
They also intended a version with a Turbine.

Richard, I had heard that at some point various jigs for the SU-26/31 had been destroyed in the midst of some kind of political snit at the factory. Is any of that true? Thanks. -Eric

Yes,Su26 jigs were destroyed-total vandalism.
But all Su29 and 31 jigs are at the Lukavitsy factory,100 kms. outside Moscow.
