Happy Holidays my fellow Yak / Cj owners and pilots. Wanted to give everybody my feelings on the status of the Yak/CJ Insurance market.
2010 was our worst year in history for crashes.
3 Yak 52s destroyed killing 6 people this year. Numerous other “normal” accidents which are expected to some degree. But the bodycount is the worst I can remember in a single year for our airplanes and we need to work on that. Mechanical? Maneuvering? Training? I really don’t have good data on the hard cause of each. 2 were seasoned Yak veterans and one was a relative newcomer.
There are 2 underwriters that have been with us for years (USSIC / SAU), providing great pricing and superb claims service. We all get mailers from new Agents and new Underwriters looking to get into the Warbird scene. Will they have the stamina to see through these tough years like USSIC and SAU have?
I am happy to discuss questions about underwriters and policies in boring detail if you want more of the scoop.
2010 has seen some neat new parts cruising around. New prop blades for M14, lots of new avionics, a new engine shop. All good for the future of these airplanes. Underwriters had expressed concern about future parts availability being a factor in fixing airplanes. I don’t see this to be any problem currently. What we don’t have we can make!
2011? What will it bring? Hopefully a MUCH safer year of flight operations. My feeling is premiums will remain mostly unchanged. I don’t anticipate any big swings. Lets all do our part: FOD checks, Hard Deck for maneuvering, and if it ain’t running right on the ground, it probably won’t get better in the air… so fix it.
Call or email me directly for details or with questions.
