Any idea why Icom (& others I believe) would call for 2X18 awg wires for
power and ground to their radio? The load is well under 10 amps and for
the short 12" run to my Avionics/Ground bus it seems like "hyper safe"

Not all runs are under 12". They're looking for
redundancy + low impedance connections. You can
drop to 20AWG for the 12" runs but do put both
in.
I think they ask for dual power leads too?
