Hello All,

Dad and I are restoring a Stearman and would like to put a modern alternator and electrical system on it without going to the expense of a Jasco alternator. Our Stearman has the Lycoming R-680. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions doing this with a B&C SD-20 alternator? Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Does the engine have and AND20000 drive pad
on it? Does it turn fast enough to stroke
the SD20 to full output (4000 rpm). Is it
stressed sufficiently for extracting the
horsepower required to power the SD-20?

Suggest you contact B&C at 316-283-8000 and
discuss your design goals with them.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your response. The engine has the standard vacuum pump mounting pad which I think is the AND20000 you mentioned. We are researching the output speed of this drive. We have not thought about how this drive is stressed. That is an excellent point to consider. We will investigate this further along with calling B&C. Mostly, I am fishing to see if this has been done before with a radial engine in an attempt to keep from reinventing the wheel when we go for a field approval. Thanks again for your help.

Best wishes for a Happy Holiday season!!

Kent
