Anyone who flys a light airplane like a Firestar that distance has my
respect.
Have a safe trip and gives us a report on whats new when you come back.

Well...thank you, Dennis.

Actually, I will be flying my MKIII, if I fly to Sebring. It is 460 sm from
my airstrip, Gantt International Airport, to Sebring Airport. I'll plan for
75 mph ground speed and shoot for about 6 hours flight time and 30 gal of
gas. Probably land at Perry, Florida, to take on fuel and get something to
eat.

There are many on the Kolb List that have flown far greater flights in
Firestars, Ultrastars, and MKIII's. It is my preferred method of cross
country flight, low and slow, with an indicated cruise of 85 mph, give or
take a few mph. It is amazing how far and where you can fly in a Kolb.

November 1987, I flew my original Firestar from Gantt International to
Miami, Florida, and back. At that time it was my longest cross country in a
Kolb, about 1,200 sm round trip. I spent the night with my Brother, Jim
Hauck, in Woodville, Florida. We had a cow pasture near Natural Bridge, FL,
to land and tie down in, about 5 miles from Jim's house. Next few nights I
camped out with the Florida Flying Gators UL Club at their airstrip down
near the Citrus Tower. Can not remember the name of the town. Had an
engine out and landed my Firestar on the Sebring High School foot ball field
next to the school house during school hours. The field was clear and I had
not other choice. At that time I also was not equipped with brakes. I was
probably a much better pilot back then than I am now. Those were the good
old days, barn storming my Kolbs. BTW: Never heard of a GPS back then and
was being pushed by a 447 Rotax with dual point ignition. Cross country
flying back then was usually a challenge in more than one way.

Glad I got to do all that fun stuff when I was a young pup of 48. Wink

mkIII - 3,011.6 hours airframe
912uls - 443.1 hours engine
5,366.6 hours logged Kolb pilot time. Don't have any idea how many Kolb
hours I have flown and not logged.
20.0 hours General Aviation time in a C-152. Wink
Military flight time, have to dig out my records, where ever they are
hidden.
Favorite flight time - solo in my Kolbs!!!

John/All

I have attended the last three or four years. Each year it gets bigger and better but not near up to what Sun-N-fun is. Three or four hours is enough for me.  It tends to be more of a high end LSA show. They haven't reserved any space for camping and little for people that fly in. So far the Kolb factory hasn't attended and no Kolb has flown in.

I will not be attending the Expo this year because I will be in Costa Rica.

We need to organize a Kolb Flyin or two again this winter in south west Florida. Is anyone out there interested? The weather has been cold and windy so not much good flying weather. I'm a bit busy with the holidays and a trip till the end of January but after that. I left my plane in Michigan this winter but I'm all checked out in a SportCruiser so I can attend a flyin most anywhere in Florida if I can reserve the plane.

Hi Folks:

Tossing around the idea of flying down to the US Sport Aviation Expo at
Sebring, Florida, 20-23 Jan 2011.  That is Thu, Fri, Sat, and Sun, for the
show.  If I do fly down, don't know if I will stay that long or not.  All
depends on whether I can stayed entertained and not get bored.

Major factor for making a decision to go will be the weather.  If it doesn't
look good, I am not hankering to camp out under the wing, or hang out at
Sebring Airport.

Secondly, I must wash Miss P'fer prior to departure.  She hasn't been washed
since just prior to Sun and Fun 2010, so she is kinda funky.

Who all has thought about or decided to visit Sebring for the show?  Let me
see a show of hands.

I do not know if Kolb Aircraft is planning to attend or not, but will let
you all know if I find out any info.

Still very much winter here in central Alabama, with snow being forecast for
REE Gifts!)

Rick N/Folks:

A Kolb Flyin in South West Florida sounds a lot better than Sebring.

After doing some research on their web site I discovered they want to charge
me 10.00 to sleep under my wing, plus entrance and parking fee.

I think I will wait until you guys get something going down there when the
weather gets better. That will give me a little more time to get my
airplane washed. Wink

I'll probably attend, not sure if I'll stay over.
Probably just do Saturday, since I don't have a place to stay.
I'd be interested in any Kolb fly-in in South FL this winter..
May fly up to S&F (a first for me.)
Will be posting a Garmin 196 this weekend on behalf of Steven Green.
Stay tuned!

John, I may take the Waiex down if the weather looks good.

One night is all I'm good for, too unless we can get a few laps in at the
track somehow... [Laughing]

Kip

Kip/Gang:

That would be fun if I knew you were going to be there. We haven't camped
together since Sun and Fun 2009, the year I got a ride in the Mayflower
Balloon, I think.

Weather will be the primary factor in whether I will fly down or not.
Physically, I think I can do the flight and probably be relatively
comfortable camping out, if the weather is going to be reasonably warm and
dry. In other words, decent "field grade flying weather". Wink

Right now, the weather up here in the Heart of Dixie sucks big time, with
snow flurries, gusts to 30 mph, and severe overcast.

I still have to wash N101AB (101st Aviation Battalion, Liftmaster Pad, Phu
Bai, RVN, 1969-70), although she flies without a complaint with 8 months
barn dust, bug and bird crap all over her.

Be glad when the weather gets warm enough to at least be somewhat
comfortable to do a little work on her. I need to rewire some of my current
radio and headset 12VDC power to insure I have not drain on the aircraft
battery when shut down. That includes the aircraft clock which is wired
direct to the battery and runs 24/7. Not that difficult to reset the clock
during engine warmup. The clock alone, can kill the battery if the engine
is not cranked in a month or so.

Glad I was able to get a few hours in after I got home from my trip West,
the first flights for me since the first of May. It really felt good to
break ground out of my old cow pasture and view the earth from another
perspective, a perspective that normal folks don't get to enjoy very often,
or have never enjoyed.

Take care and Happy New Year,

john h

Happy and Safe Flying New Year to ALL.

The US Sport Aviation Expo 2011 is a great place to be in the Middle of January, the weather over the past four years has always been great for most days of the show..

Once again I will be exhibiting my AeroLIFE products (www.aerolifeindustries.com) and this year I am in booth spaces 105/106 in tent “A”. For this year I will have in attendance Graf von Glock as part of the show and as always we will be distributing the best Jelly Beans any one has ever tasted, I also have a drawing every day and free samples of my product “Release” And, for anyone who has struggled to remove Loctite 5910 from the Gear Box and engine of a 912 series Rotax engine ”AeroLIFE’s Release” completes the task in a matter of seconds.

So, stop by if you are at the show, meet Mr. Graf von Glock , pick up your free sample of “Release”, enter the drawing and by all means don’t forget the Jelly Beans and if you have never been to Sebring in January for the show you are overdue . Also, have a safe trip whatever your mode of transportation. See you at the Show.
Sincerely,
John T. Schmidt, CFI
