Well it has been kind of quiet latley, hopefully everyone is just out flying!  I know I've been trying to fly as much as I can up here in Mn.  Winter is in full swing and the plane is on skis..... I'm loving it.  I spotted four Timber wolves a week ago, I think they are the same ones I saw in that spot about 3 weeks before that.  Got pictures this time even.  Some friends of mine were ice fishing on a lake about 20 miles N of my place so I went up to see how they were doing.  On the way up there, I spotted the wolves.  They were laying around on a frozen beaver pond, one was even curled up on top of the beaver house.  I ended up giving one of my friends that was fishing a ride back to where I had seen the wolves, and we spotted them again.   My advice for winter is: don't put that plane away till spring, get out and enjoy the 'best time of year'   Take care,  Jim Chuk

Hi Jim-
I'm curious about your skis....are they homebuilt? I just finished up
the "spats" for my HB skis, and they look similar to yours in that
they will allow for no (or minimal) snow buildup on the tops of the
skis. I'm reinstalling them today, minus paint or even a smooth
sanding of the fiberglas material that I built the tops from. I
figure this will be the worst case scenario, and when the 45-degree
temp hits us (Lower Michigan) next Friday, I'll have some time to
remove them, and smooth and paint the covers. It was a lot of work to
make the covers, which weigh 20 ounces each, but from past flight
with no covers, I'd be carrying around 3-4 pounds of snow on each
ski, so it was worth the effort. Also, this should preclude me having
to brush or blow the snow off the skis before putting it back in the
hangar.

Hi Lynn,  yes the skis are my own invention.  I've built 6 or 7 sets for myself and others using this design and it seems to work fine for me.  I fly from my home strip so I don't have to take off or land on blacktop so that's why I went with straight skis.  Here is a picture closer up.

Thanks, Jim....I just put mine back on today, but no flight due to
strong crosswind. Tomorrow, perhaps.
I was going to use aluminum like you did, but felt that 4130 tubing
was better suited for my skis that retain the wheels. It also makes
it easier to install...it took me just 11 minutes to attach the skis,
and safety the 8....yes, 8 cable connections, plus the 4 bungy cords.
Double everything on cables and bungy cords, per my flight
instructors' "instructions". He made a good case for redundant
cabling and bungy cords, citing an accident that he witnessed. So for
a few more pounds of hardware, I'm feeling pretty safe. And after
last year's "ski tuck", I'm glad I had the extra bungy cords.
However, I just had not made them strong enough initially....a bit of
shortening of the bungy's and all was well. I'll post a picture of my
new fiberglass covers after a flight.

Hi Lynn, yes the skis are my own invention. I've built 6 or 7
sets for myself and others using this design and it seems to work
fine for me. I fly from my home strip so I don't have to take off
or land on blacktop so that's why I went with straight skis. Here
is a picture closer up.
