I'll hopefully be ready to install my pitot in the next 3-4 weeks. I have a Gretz heated pitot and somebody recommended I check it for leaks before installing. I guess this is where I'm showing my lack of knowledge.....How do I check it for leaks???

Also, does anybody have a list of items that should be done before riveting on the bottom wing skins? I have the Vans conduit installed with a couple strings pulled through each wing/conduit. I'll be using the gretz heated pitot as mentioned above. Some sort of LED NAV/POS lighting in the wingtips (not sure what yet--any recommendations) and the duckworks leading edge landing/taxi lighting in the wingtips, vans stall warning, etc.... I'm sure I'm leaving something out. Just curious if anybody had a list on any websites that may be a good idea to complete before bottom skins. Don't really plan on pulling wires yet but would atleast like to pull strings through to make wiring easier later.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

After you install the pitot and connect it to the tubing going to the wing root, you want to check that system. Tape over both the pitot inlet and any vent holes it may have. Connect a hand vacuum pump to the tubing at the wing root. Pull about 2-3" of vacuum. See that it holds that vacuum for at least a couple minutes. You just want to know that all the connections are leak free. When you have the airplane together, the static ports and pitot get connected to a vacuum pump, and for VFR pressure is lowered to show 1000AGL on the altimeter. By reg, it must not lose more than 100 ft in one minute. The pitot is kept at same pressure as static port, otherwise it would wind up the airspeed to need top scale from the higher pressure of ambient vs the static system. If the pitot had any leaks they would show in airspeed above zero.  IFR the system is pumped to lower pressure, 1000 ft at at time, all the way up to 20,000 ft (or max you want it certified to), and the altitudes must match a certified altimeter within a fairly narrow tolerance. Leaks in pitot system would endanger the airspeed indicator(at least the mechanical ones).

Perhaps for slow build wings. For QB wings, the inner bottom skin is already installed, so aileron trim would have to be put in through the existing access cover.

I would recommend that you follow Kelly's method to check the pitot head itself before installing it in the wing. Mine had a leak inside the head. It was a pita to remove it after the wing was skinned and installed. I assumed the leak was in one of my fittings, and spent a lot of time checking every one from my panel and working outboard.
