I second the motion for one of Tom's oil filter cutters  (the flyboyaccessories link).  I got mine from Aircraft Spruce---mainly  because it was the cheapest filter cutter I could find---but it works  great.  Cuts the top off the filter in one pass, like a can opener.   Just be ready for the filter element to drip a lot of oil, even after you've  left the filter sitting upside down for a while.  Ask me how I  know...
