Dan,    A PSC type motor can be  safely slowed using a properly rated dimmer.    These dimmers are  specially designed for this type of motor and are NOT just lamp  dimmers.     Search for Lutron Fan Speed controls and look  for the fully variable type, not the 3 or 4 speed preset type used for paddle  fans.
