Good afternoon.

Well its not been a good day thus far, we've discovered a cylinder head crack right across the exhaust valve seat and into the head on No. 5 cylinder Sad

The engine has not been run since it left the PLAAF so I'm assuming poor handling (possible over-cooling in the descent, who knows????). Maybe they will help out with parts but I dont know yet...

Can the head be swapped without replacing cylinder and piston? OR do we need to replace the whole of No5 assembly?

Any experiences or previous findings would be greatly appreciated!

Regards

Harv

I would recommend replacing the #5 cylinder; the complete assembly. If
you were to try to remove the head from the barrel, you'd still have to
remove the cylinder completely. Then to find just the head might be a
challenge. Definitely not worth the effort and cost. Call Doug as
I'm confident he can supply you with a cylinder.

Cheers,

I'm potentially looking at removing all the cylinders for an inspection and clean up of valves and seats, re-lapping etc. The trouble as I can see it is you just don't know whats gone on with it in the past?

Can tdc height of the pistons be measured closely enough to establish if we had any bent connecting rods from hydraulic'd cylinders?

Thus might be an opportunity to fit total seal piston rings? Not that I want to create more work, I just want the peace of mind.

Even if you were able to accurately measure the link rod lengths (the
master rod is the shortest and there are 4 other link rod lengths
ranging from .15mm to .39mm longer), I don't think that would give you
the peace of mind you're looking for. I've always believed that peace
of mind equals a bit more work. And since you fly behind this engine, a
bit more work WOULD be well worth the effort and give you the peace of
mind you're looking for.

I does make me wonder what caused the cracked valve seat.

Whats the best procedure for checking straightness of the rods?

TIA
