Gang,
Had my first hydraulic failure in 15 years of flying Twin Commanders. Happily, in the best possible place.... You guessed it, on the ground! Had a short flight of 50 minutes from San Diego (SEE) back to Camarillo (CMA). Had the breaker pulled for the electric pump. Landed as normal, still showed 1000 psi. Taxied to the east end and shut down on the ramp. Did my usual post flight walk-around looking for drippy, dangly bits and low and behold, there was sweet red fluid from nose to tail. dripping out of every weep hole from the brake master cylinders in front of the cabin bulkhead, to the rear of the baggage bay. It was getting to dark for further investigation so I took a quick look in the tank, where there was no fluid, just a shiny tank.
Took a few days to track it down, including pulling out the cabin floor (could Commander have used a few more screws)? The belly was a red swimming pool. Finally found the leak in the right brake pressure return line. Neat little pin-hole behind the baggage upholstery right inside the baggage door in that rear corner. The upholstery had aluminum backing so the fluid squirted under pressure on the aluminum, and just got redirected to the belly. No doubt, that steep landing approach, all left hand turns, helped move the red pool to the front of the plane. Should have it sorted out in a couple days now that it's found. Then there are the 8,726 screws in the floor!!!
The real mystery to me is why was the tank empty? The breaker for the electric pump was pulled. Shouldn't there have been the pint of "emergency" fluid below the stand-pipe left?
Any thoughts?
Craig

Hi Tylor,
N52WD is a Model 520, s/n 141 (formerly N21SA, N21S, N2629B).
Was bought on August 23rd 1997, as N21SA, by Declo Enterprises Inc., of Lafayette, Indiana and re-registered as N52WD in December 1998.
On February 10th 2008, the FAA were advised by Declo Enterprises of a sale in December 2006 to Kirt Young, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Presumably, no Bill of Sale, Application for Registration and the $5 fee has been submitted and it’s currently listed as “sale reported”.
I have a photo of it at Fond Du Lac County airport, Wisconsin, taken on July 31st 2003 but have nothing later.
It’s been modified, with the installation of winglets.
Best Regards,
Barry

Barry,
What do you have on N52WD?
Has any one seen this aircraft and where is it?

Jim,
There are 2 public airports near El Reno, OK and 3 private airports.
The FAA is now requiring everyone to re-register all aircraft to get their data base up to date.
i looked up the El Reno Regional on Google Maps and there appears to be a Twin Commander sitting on the ramp.
Is this the aircraft you are looking for?

Hi Tylor,
Could be:
s/n 39, N411VV.
Repossessed by Minnwest Bank Ortonville, Ortonville, Minnesota but sold to Charles R Wray, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
I saw it at El Reno Airpark, Oklahoma in October 2007.
If you get any clues, let me know.
e.g. who was the debtor?
Best Regards,
Barry

Looking for a 520 that is in OK someplace.
My friend/client has been awarded ownership of a 520 from a bankruptcy court.
He does not know the N number and does not seem to be able to get any information from the debtor.
It is suppose to be at a small private airport in OK.
I remember seeing one for sale at one time in that area.
If any one has any ideas, please let me know.

Still got the GO-435 stuff? I might be able to stop by there on our way back west from Detroit in the 520.

Had one today as well in the best possible place - just after I'd made the turn off the active rwy at El Monte, CA!
I managed to taxi her back to her parking using the hand pump and as I stepped out it was obvious that it was a broken line just after the firewall. I toyed with the idea of flying her flapless and with gear out down to my mechanic, but sensibly decided against it. Measured the hose and they'll come to me and replace it.
