I've started a new thread to discuss the topic of thread lubes for installing the fuel filler neck. If you followed the post on "Removing fuel filler neck" you'll see where I recently had to cut mine out while trying to get left wing apart for modification. I had a problem with threads galling when I first test fit the filler neck to one of my tanks and had to cut that neck out too and borrow the "big tap" from Zenith. I never thought I'd find myself doing it again.
I had no problems removing and reinstalling the neck on the first wing I modified but the second wouldn't budge. During original assembly I cleaned the threads of both tank necks out with the "big tap" and used Permatex High Performance thread sealer on the screw-in portion.
I know the subject of thread sealers has been covered before but some time has passed and I thought it would be worthwhile to pose the question again.
Before I reinstall the filler neck I need to decide what to use as a thread lube. So far I've heard 1.) Permatex High Performance Thread Lube (that's what I used last time with 50% success) 2.) Aviation Form-a-gasket 3.) EZ Turn (fuelube) & 4.) Bakerseal - I suspect #1 & 4 are similar in composition but can't say for sure. I'm not sure of the anti-galling properties of #2 although I have used it on fuel fittings before. #3 I have no experience with.
At this point I'm leaning towards trying the EZ Turn - it's formulated for aviation fuels. Nonetheless, I'd like to hear from others about their experience with various products. Heaven forbid I ever have to open the leading edge again but if I do I'd like to do so without having to use a hacksaw.

Fuel Lube/EZ lube is what I used. It is thick, and extremely difficult to get off your hands especially if it's cool or cold. Haven't had to remove my caps, but I think that I could??? I'd find it hard to believe that that stuff would allow any corrosion, its thick nasty stuff which means it's probably good.

Tim, Fuel Lube is the way to go. I had to cut one of mine out also but that was during the fabrication process. I used the filler neck to align and hold in place. after welding the inner, the filler neck was frozen in place. I used fuel lube after and have since done the upgrade, they came right out.
On another note the CZAW plane had some white sealer on them and it took two men two hours to coax them out. We used the big tap and fuel lube after that. it was recommended by a APII.

Tim,
My experience was like yours. I had a 50% success rate in getting my fuel filler necks off for the mods. I used the permatex sealant but probably used it on more threads than really necessary. When I re-installed the filler necks, I made sure to only use the permatex on the last group of threads. Now I will not know how well I have set myself up for future removals, and I hope not to have to test it any time soon. The amount of sealant was adequate to seal the threads during last years flying season.
Whatever you use, just use it sparingly.

When I ordered the stuff to make up fuel hoses from Summit Racing, one of the things recommended was an anti-seize compound. I used what was provided (a blue paste) on all the aluminum threaded connections. I had to un-do several connections and had no trouble. Has anyone tried this stuff on the fuel filler neck threads?

Fuel lube (EZ Turn) is what I used. I was able to remove the filler necks easily when I did the upgrade to each wing. I also used liberal amounts of fuel lube on top of the fuel senders on the end of each tank. I have not had any leaks yet with the few gallons of 100LL I have in each tank.
